Made these two in GIMP, could be used in the back of a book about space, like a book showing digital illustrations of many locations around space, with context.

Some more photography with a new plasma globe. This is definitely my favorite plasma effect so far, with the blue-green colors caused by a special mixture of xenon, krypton, and some other trace gases.

I discovered them from a company in Vancouver, BC, "Aurora Plasma Design" (website) who specializes in these. However, they only ship to Canada and the US at the moment. These are very large (15" or 38cm diameter) and high quality globes, made mostly for science museums, and they have a large price tag to match. But they've also just started a line of smaller more affordable ones with the same effects. :)

Well, I am in NY so that is not a problem for me.....large price tag, are we talking four figures here?  The smaller ones might be more my thing, do they respond to acoustics or sound effects, Wat?  Do you recall the movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice where the guy makes electricity move in response to music and he's inside a Faraday Cage?  He was a physics major so I'm hoping you're a fan of the movie too :P  I was looking to use a smaller version of these globes in the same way and do "light painting" with them and try to capture that using that Live Composite mode on my camera- it's supposed to be good for that sort of thing.

here's the scene:

More like $400-600, while their 8" globes are going for $80. On the large globes the voltage is easily adjustable with a dial so you can get a wide range of effects, and their frequency can be adjusted as well if you open them up. But they're not intended to be audio modulated. If that's what you're going for you might want to look at other globes that specifically have that feature, or you could try to mod one yourself.

That scene reminds of another thing that is possible with audio modulated tesla coils. Most have seen how they can be used to make "music", but what's even more impressive is what they can achieve at higher frequencies:

^Yes, this is the arc singing the song. :)

http://forum.spaceengine.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=296&p=25428#p25428  :)   (For discussion of meteor induced sounds, but aurora may work in a similar way.)

On an unrelated note, today I got out on a proper adventure in the mountains for the first time in months. I missed this.

I have been working on this drawing for quite a while. Now all it needs is a title...

They look amazing! I have never been able to find any crystals that nice in all the years of hunting for them.

Best one I ever found was this one of what I am 90% certain is natrolite.  There just isn't much interesting minerals in Victoria. Nearly everything in my collection I have purchased from dealers.
