Tonight was the best sunset I've seen in a very long while -- the sky looked like a watercolor.  Colors in photo came out very accurately. :)

Wow what caused those brilliant colors and patterns and how long did that last, Wat?

Displays like these require a layer of clouds for the red light of sunset to be projected onto, but at the same time a clear sky just over the horizon so that the sun can hit those clouds from underneath.

The best part of the display lasted about 10 minutes, though some red was visible near the horizon for at least a half hour.  Sunsets last longer the higher your latitude is.

What's the weather like down there in Washington State Wats? It looks rather warm, to be honest :).

It's very nice right now.  -6C and snowing, getting about 30cm at sea level over the next 3 days.  Snow at sea level here is somewhat rare so I'm enjoying it. :)

Yeah, same here in the Kootenays. Sunny days, but of late It's been snowing at night, with an average temperature of about -15C.

I wonder if there are a high quantity of atmospheric dust particles- I've been seeing some amazingly vivid sunsets for several days now, and they have been reported worldwide.  It could be that the recent volcanic eruptions had something to do with it (and also made the recent total lunar eclipse darker and not as vivid!)

Nice scene. :)  Looks like similar weather as what we've been having here lately as well.  Pics from a hike a couple days ago:
