Just in time for Halloween!

The greatest earthquake in Norway/Norwegian waters ever measured surely woke up the crew at Jan Mayen this morning.  18 people live there, about 120 km from the epicentre of the quake which measured M6.8.  It probably felt like heavy, steady shaking for a minute or so for the people there, but the distance to the epicentre was large enough to avoid the violent shaking.

My seismometer in Oslo 1600 km away went off the charts (sensitive around 1/17 Hz).  About 1.5 hours of data below. My geophones sensitive around 4.5 Hz also picked up this quake loud and clear (low pass filter at 4.5 Hz in the plot below).  About 15 minutes of data.

When was the last quake in those waters? Are smaller quakes normal (probably not)?

This is on the Atlantic ridge, so quakes there are common.  There's a magnitude 6 quake in that area every 5 years or so, and 6.8 is the largest ever measured there, but the most reliable records only go back 50 years or so. Magnitude 7 events may be centuries apart.

I just obtained a large (38cm diameter) plasma globe and began testing it out, and also took some photos.  Plasma globes + long exposure photography is a match made in heaven.

It doesn't have anything to do with Space Engine though, and I think the SE logo has been around long enough to be well known.  I don't think it'd be a good idea to replace it.

You're sure? I could imagine the "SE" logo positioned in the purple bulb at the base. Maybe with the words "Broaden your mind as you broaden your horizons" or something cheesy like that .

Actually, it was -4.5C.  It's been snowing out of thin air resulting in 2-3 cm of fine powder on the ground slowly accumulated over two days.  It was green two days ago.
