You have no idea how right you are Gnar. The people on my crew all had BAs, PhDs or were just really educated and interesting to talk to, hours of hot (we had 37 degree days where I worked), sometimes uncomfortable work would pass if you just had somebody like-minded and fun to keep your mind off it. And yes, when the day is done, its nice to just lean back, look at the honest work you did and know that it was something pure. After a stressful winter and spring, it was VERY therapeutic.I think it's fairly common that many of the landscapers or gardeners you see puttering around with their hands in the dirt are contemplating faster-than-light communications, quantum mechanics, alien races, the universe observing itself and the general meaning of life.
The greatest motivation in life and the most satisfying experiences I have are when I create things and places for people that will outlast myself, and hopefully make the world a better place.
It's all very therapeutic and I hope you enjoyed your summer activities.
