Just returned from a 4800km road trip that took me through the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. I'd driven around the side of Yellowstone several times going back and forth to Colorado, so this time while on the return leg I thought "I'm in no hurry -- I should really go check it out." I passed the Tetons and entered the park from the south side right at dawn, saw Old Faithful erupt, plus Grand Prismatic and countless other thermal pools and geysers. Just spectacular and totally worth it.

It was chilly when I arrived in the morning (about 7C), and by mid-day it rose to around 25. But much more comfortable than at lower elevations where it was often above 35C.

The steam clouds can be quite pleasantly warm -- or scalding, if you get too close. Then there are the unfortunate souls who went into the pools...

My recording of the Fiji earthquake of 2018-08-19 at > 15300 km distance. Despite its 8.2 magnitude strength, it was hardly in the news at all. A 6.8 afterquake can also be seen at the right. Even my geophones sensitive around 4.5 Hz detected the P wave of this quake loud and clear despite its distance.

Austin, Texas - Fall of 2018 - Home & Garden Show
Local landscrapers and general home improvement trades people meet with the public during this weekend long event.

We've won Best of Show ten times in a row. That's over 5 years for both Spring and Fall shows.
I guess I'm doing at least one thing right.

Now that my professional responsibilities are complete for today, its back to building exoplanets & systems on Space Engine!

I think it's fairly common that many of the landscapers or gardeners you see puttering around with their hands in the dirt are contemplating faster-than-light communications, quantum mechanics, alien races, the universe observing itself and the general meaning of life.

The greatest motivation in life and the most satisfying experiences I have are when I create things and places for people that will outlast myself, and hopefully make the world a better place.

It's all very therapeutic and I hope you enjoyed your summer activities.

You have no idea how right you are Gnar. The people on my crew all had BAs, PhDs or were just really educated and interesting to talk to, hours of hot (we had 37 degree days where I worked), sometimes uncomfortable work would pass if you just had somebody like-minded and fun to keep your mind off it. And yes, when the day is done, its nice to just lean back, look at the honest work you did and know that it was something pure. After a stressful winter and spring, it was VERY therapeutic.

Photos from a late summer hike. Snow cover is about at its minimum for the year, and the foliage is getting its colors. A whisper of winter is in the air, and it will not be much longer until the storms return.

Looks like a nice area for hikes. Interesting to see how pines mark the upper limit for trees. In Scandinavia there is a zone where dwarf birches take over where pines have to give up.
