Hornblower, wow! That looks amazing! Actually, do you think that in the future, SE will look like that? Like, in 2025 or something? Also, what is that red thing in lower right corner? I imagine it being a volcano, but do you know what it is? :)

If you're talking about the squiggly red thing out over the water, it's definitely not a volcano.  Here's a quick image processing to bring it out (basically overlaying the red channel with the inverse blue channel)
Image

Yeah, it's not just a squiggle -- it's a long path of dots.  I honestly have no idea what it is.  Probably a sensor or image artifact. The path gives the funny impression of being a plausible ship or airplane track.  But it passes over clouds, so it's not a ship, and the image is a very short exposure so nothing can cover that distance in a short enough time anyway.

Except an alien spacecraft, I guess.

Oh, that also sounds plausible. But why did it fly down close to the island you can see a little bit of in the lower right corner, and then fly back again? I think it was either an alien spaceship or a drawing or something on the camera.

To be clear, I was being facetious about it being aliens.  Actually now that I look at it more closely I think it is an overlay of the path of a ship afterall, going in or coming out of Honolulu.  Why it hung out for a while west of Lana'i, I couldn't say though, let alone why it's on the image at all.

Maybe it was west of Lana'i because it was a tourist ship, and so the tourists could see the island.

Here's what it is: The experiment consisted of a team of scientists on the ground getting algae samples from the region and comparing it to the satellite image. That red path is the path of that boat   :)

Oh okay. How did you know? The explanation seems plausible though.
But why was it red in the original photo?

Oh yeah, my bad. It's not algae, it's plankton  :)
