General suggestions for SpaceEngine

13 Dec 2016 12:44

Just wanted to give some feedback.  I absolutely love Space Engine.  About a year ago I found Celestia a year ago and I started looking around for something newer about six months ago.  When I saw video of Space Engine on youtube, I was drooling.  I purchased a GeForce GTX 1060 two months ago, just so I could play Space Engine.  I love the program and I enjoy sharing it with my kids.  I actually put them to sleep now with a video by Lifelive42.

Things I love, specifically:

1. Absolutely gorgeous.
2. Procedurally generated universe you can explore for your entire life and never see everything.
3. Scientifically based. Physics used for space travel.  Gravity and celestial mechanics.  I'm learning a layman's level of orbital dynamics, astrobiology, and astrogeology.
4. No combat.  I can get that elsewhere.  Focused on exploration and scientific learning.  In the future I'm sure things like trade, mining, and colonization will be added, and I look forward to it.  But what I want to do is explore.
5. Somewhat realistic spacecraft and spaceflight.  I know warp drive is not practical right now, but if something had to give it would have to be spaceflight.

Things I don't really have a problem with:
1. The spaceship interface.  I didn't know anything beyond some really really basic high school physics before I started playing, and the first thing I did was jump into using spacecraft.  I've never even played Kerbal Space Program. I've noticed people who have played a lot of that game have a superior knowledge of celestial navigation.  Jarschel's Space Flight School .pdf was a great help in figuring out how the different HUD symbols worked, but most was a simple matter of trial and error.  Honestly, learning how to fly an Apache helicopter in Jane's Longbow back in '96 was more difficult, but learning how to do that was useful in landing a Skylone.

Things I would like see improve:
1. More astrogeology. Planetary composition. But I think that's coming already in a future version.
2. Time control and spacecraft nav windows run together at the bottom of the screen, but that may just be a problem with my monitor size.
3. I named my Wayfarer class warpship "Victoria".  If I exit the game while controlling it when I restart the planetarium the program sends me to the Victoria asteroid in the Sol system belt.  Just a bug I guess.

What I look forward to:
1. Turning the sandbox into a game.  Adding a mission geometry.  Adding delta-v budgets.  Boost exponent limits. Adding a reward and progression geometry.

I've been waiting all my life to play something like SpaceEngine, even if it is not complete and not really a game as yet.  Thanks for creating a true work of art in entertainment.

General suggestions for SpaceEngine

Somethings that I am sure has already been suggested but if not, I will throw it out there anyway

1) Please make the HD maps integrated into the game as so that way the planets and moons (at least in our solar system) are already good looking and ready to be viewed in all their majesty instead of having to download extra extensions
2) I would like to see the mods from the NASA stuff like the Hubble Telescope, ISS, etc as space ships that we can fly around in. I love the ones that are in the game as the default ones, but it would be pretty sweet to see stuff from NASA be playable too
3) For the descriptions on the planets and moons, I would like there to be info on the planets, moons, nebula, etc that we have already discovered. I just find it odd that for some reason, only a very small hand full of planets (such as the sun and earth get a description) but other things like Eris or the Cat's Paw Nebula have totally no info attached to them

Those are really the only three things that I have in mind that I would like to see in the new update. But other than that, hope everyone has a great rest of their day/afternoon/evening/night and good luck on exploring.

KChamp, just a tip because I have a 15" laptop so I see your problem. If you click two times the small square (pin) top-left of time control panel, you'll make it retractable, other panels as well. It should ease your flight experience.

This would require that everyone who wants to use SE download 50 GB just to install and use the program. This is pretty unreasonable, especially since not all users care about Sol system worlds having great textures since they spend most of their time exploring procedural worlds. The current system is pretty good, IMO: users who want the added detail can download it, and those who don't want it don't have to.
2) I would like to see the mods from the NASA stuff like the Hubble Telescope, ISS, etc as space ships that we can fly around in. I love the ones that are in the game as the default ones, but it would be pretty sweet to see stuff from NASA be playable too
These are currently available as mods, and might become official addons or default spacecraft at some point in the future. If you can access the old forum, look for my mods and addons thread. You can download (slightly outdated but still working) Hubble, ISS, and several other craft. If you can't reach the old forum, then be patient as I'll release them here soon™.
3) For the descriptions on the planets and moons, I would like there to be info on the planets, moons, nebula, etc that we have already discovered. I just find it odd that for some reason, only a very small hand full of planets (such as the sun and earth get a description) but other things like Eris or the Cat's Paw Nebula have totally no info attached to them
At present, all of these descriptions have to be manually written, not copied from anywhere, and should contain accurate and updated information. Doing all of this takes time, as you have to look up information, often from multiple sources, on every object you write about. As there are well over 100,000 catalog objects in SE, writing about every one would be impractical.

But if you'd like to work on some of them, feel free to post your work on the forum and it can be incorporated into future releases.

Proper Ship Landing System

I think fly to, because that was the one that crashed you literally straight into the planet.

Proper Ship Landing System

The 'fly to' button actually isn't meant to make you land, instead, it brings you close to whatever object you selected. The gravity of the planet/star is actually the reason you 'land' on the object. So for now, you will have to land safely through manual flight control.
Anyways, I personally see no implications of such a feature, unless the developer were to push the game closer to Kerbal Space Program, and add landing pads, or human/non-human planetary exploration, or both.

And that is totally fine that not all 100,000 plus things in the (at least at this time) known cataloged universe has descriptions. Like I was just saying at least in our solar system and maybe a few other little things like a nebula or two should have descriptions. I absolutely understand that not every last little thing has to have or will have a description. That would be insane. And besides, it's one thing to have a description for things in our solar system such as the "The Cat's Paw Nebula" or Mars, but in the current catalog when you have things like "Galaxy Z115-36M" or whatever random number it is given when you press the magnifying glass, that stuff totally does not need to have a description. But I can put my findings for the different descriptions up on the forum but I would at least need to know where to put them first so that way I don't end up putting them in the wrong posting.

General suggestions for SpaceEngine

One feature I've always wanted in the system map is the ability to compare any body to Earth. I'd be real neat to see how a gas giant or asteroid sizes up to our own planet.
I like cute pokemon and space games.

Why just compare with earth? You could compare Jupiter to a red dwarf, The moon to a dwarf planet, and so on. I've also wanted such a feature too.

I have a quick suggestion. Can there be the possibility of making it where we can have a button on the right which would allow us to display constellations like there is buttons to allow us to display clouds or not? That is something I think would be neat. Just click on the button to see which stars make up Orion or Torus.

Astronaut System

16 Dec 2016 10:55

Basically it makes it so you can have an avatar astronaut player guy that you can control and walk on surfaces of planets and asteroids (maybe have a jet-pack for small maneuvers). And then if you walk up to a ship you can press a key or click on it to get in and control it!

What do you think?
You could do something like this with the ship docking system.  Use a low thrust on an astronaut model, add a docking port to a ship, and get in and out of the ship and explore surfaces.  When I get back to my pc I will look into it.
