Just wanted to give some feedback. I absolutely love Space Engine. About a year ago I found Celestia a year ago and I started looking around for something newer about six months ago. When I saw video of Space Engine on youtube, I was drooling. I purchased a GeForce GTX 1060 two months ago, just so I could play Space Engine. I love the program and I enjoy sharing it with my kids. I actually put them to sleep now with a video by Lifelive42.
Things I love, specifically:
1. Absolutely gorgeous.
2. Procedurally generated universe you can explore for your entire life and never see everything.
3. Scientifically based. Physics used for space travel. Gravity and celestial mechanics. I'm learning a layman's level of orbital dynamics, astrobiology, and astrogeology.
4. No combat. I can get that elsewhere. Focused on exploration and scientific learning. In the future I'm sure things like trade, mining, and colonization will be added, and I look forward to it. But what I want to do is explore.
5. Somewhat realistic spacecraft and spaceflight. I know warp drive is not practical right now, but if something had to give it would have to be spaceflight.
Things I don't really have a problem with:
1. The spaceship interface. I didn't know anything beyond some really really basic high school physics before I started playing, and the first thing I did was jump into using spacecraft. I've never even played Kerbal Space Program. I've noticed people who have played a lot of that game have a superior knowledge of celestial navigation. Jarschel's Space Flight School .pdf was a great help in figuring out how the different HUD symbols worked, but most was a simple matter of trial and error. Honestly, learning how to fly an Apache helicopter in Jane's Longbow back in '96 was more difficult, but learning how to do that was useful in landing a Skylone.
Things I would like see improve:
1. More astrogeology. Planetary composition. But I think that's coming already in a future version.
2. Time control and spacecraft nav windows run together at the bottom of the screen, but that may just be a problem with my monitor size.
3. I named my Wayfarer class warpship "Victoria". If I exit the game while controlling it when I restart the planetarium the program sends me to the Victoria asteroid in the Sol system belt. Just a bug I guess.
What I look forward to:
1. Turning the sandbox into a game. Adding a mission geometry. Adding delta-v budgets. Boost exponent limits. Adding a reward and progression geometry.
I've been waiting all my life to play something like SpaceEngine, even if it is not complete and not really a game as yet. Thanks for creating a true work of art in entertainment.
