Hello! I did talk with SpaceEngineer about this some time ago and I wonder if anything can be done to add the realistic maps and shapes for Solar System's asteroids and comets for this information is available. I can not do this myself because I do not have much tools for that and I do not know how it is done for SE. So I am asking if someone who knows how to help with this could do this. The site includes information on pole positions on the model.

Obviously the most detailed model should be chosen when the site has many for one object. These are models based on radar or spacecraft data. Most light curve based models are not very precise. However some of them were less sharp angled and maybe could be used in SE. Some of these objects were added to the catalog with my catalog update.

With recently implemented static space ships, it's possible to expand this system to render any kind of planetary object with a custom model (as like Celestia did). So you may start importing obj models of asteroids as "space ships" (using the manual). When complete, email models to me, and I start upgrading the static ships system to use those models for asteroids.

This would be an ideal system. certainly for objects like 67P, where doing a cylindrical elevation map would be ridiculous and impossible due to overhanging areas.

It looks like people is starting to refine 3D models for asteroid Ryugu (now been visited by Hayabusa2).
This model was made by Roman Tkachenko. I've been unable to locate the actual model but I guess we will have the opportunity to see it in SE when a model based on better data arrives.
