Another take.  This time I installed Gimp with a 16 bit manipulation path.  And I toned down the hard light effect by reducing the opacity somewhat.  And further smoothing by using selective Gaussian blur.  I think this matches what the eye saw fairly well without exaggerating.

OMG! that's awesome!

I think it's cool how all of us who saw this eclipse saw the same shape of corona, which matches up between all our photos.  You can compare that climber-in-the-sun photo with Midtskogen's right above it and see the same thing in almost the same orientation.  Yet that shape is also special and specific to this eclipse.  The corona in the next and every other solar eclipse will look different!

I think it's cool how all of us who saw this eclipse saw the same shape of corona, which matches up between all our photos.

Of course, since we're looking at the same thing, even from the same area.  Not even the distance in time and location to the east coast would make a difference.  But I know what you mean.  And it also shows that none of us faked our photos.
The diamond of that Smith Rock photo, third contact, appears at a different place than in Madras, though, but that makes sense since the photo was taken further south, much closer to Redmond at the edge of the zone than Madras at the centre line.  So they had a shorter eclipse.  I remember those rocks on the right side of 97 when we drove up to Madras (below).  Pretty special rock formations.

It will be interesting to see how well this prediction matches up with the reality.

I mean they look very similar indeed, but there are several parts that the prediction got completly wrong. I like it, i'ts quite accurate.

Nice!  I'd say their prediction was pretty good.  They got the locations of the plumes pretty much right, and to a good degree even their shape and way they pinch down into thin streamers.  Differences are that in reality there is more fine structure, and more spokes from the polar regions.  Also, to the eye, the corona extends much farther than the lower image suggests, which is more in line with what the prediction showed.

I've put together a quick video to show the changes in the sky and landscape around/during totality.  It's from the GoPro, and sped up by 8x.  In particular, watch the horizon colors and the clouds -- the eerie twilight colors become apparent even before the Sun goes out.  You can also see a change in the way objects are lit by the ambient light during totality.  Early on there is more ambient light from the east, and then it switches to the west in the second half.

The person standing in the foreground is my friend who came in from Colorado.  I am visible in the frame at the end of totality in a blue shirt.

Decided I'd also put up a portion of the raw video to show our and the crowd reactions to the approach and arrival of totality.  Visually the video is a very pale reflection of the event, but you can hear in our voices how amazing it was.  There's a bit of swearing as well -- it couldn't be helped.

The crowd reaction is part of the experience. It looks like you were closer to the camp ground entrance than we were, or at least certainly in a slightly different place, since the cars were lined up towards the direction of the sun.

I have videos from three different video cameras, which I intend to synchronise.  I just hadn't had the time yet.  Also, I should edit the video of the whole trip into something viewable.

So... who's begun planning Argentina in 2019?

The most detailed photograph of the corona that I've seen so far.  While it doesn't really resemble what the eye sees anymore, it's pretty interesting!

Is it just my memory playing tricks or was it possible to see the Moon's face during totality?
