Intergalactic trip in preparation

05 Aug 2021 19:00

I was having success holding the ship up at main engine speed 3 and hover engines at 18 but then I banged into a mountain when I took a break.  How long have you been able to fly without needing to adjust something?  I was able to do it for an hour at an altitude of about a km.  I want to be close enough to the ground to get a good view of the terrain.

I'm using the num pad to move the nose up but the target wont follow so the speed is crawling along.  Is there a different way to move the target up?

I suppose there is no way to add one at the front of the ship to see outside?
A window or a camera? I moved a camera on my shuttle to the top of the tail fin. It seemed like a logical place to put one on a ship with no windows. And my docking corridors are aligned with that view. (And keep in mind that most ships are built with skins that are one-sided. You can see them from the outside, but they are invisible from the inside.)
Is kill rotation activated by pressing the End key?
NumPad 5 key, or the button underneath the Prograde orbit button.  All you need is right here.

End key is level-with-horizon mode. Note that activating pretty much any autopilot mode will automatically call the kill-rotation mode first.

Both lol.  I guess there is no way to add windows.  How do you position your cameras?  Can they just be dragged around the display?  8 cameras sounds like a lot.
Oh I've been using both the end key and numpad 5.  It helps stop the uneven motion of the ship.  I've now had the the ship flying without adjusting anything for an hour now!  Set main engines to 2 and hover engines to 21!  How long have you been able to fly over a planet without making any adjustments (and not crashing or flying off into space?)

My planetary trip lasted for four hours before even with my tame settings I still managed to just about fly off the planet lol.  And it got very dark on the planet, I was thinking of accelerating time to daylight but would that cause the ship to jump ahead in its trajectory too?

an hour later, at hour 5 of my flight this is where I ended up and had to cut the engines

Even with a throttle level of 2, with that ship it seems you are still accelerating. Sooner or later, you will be in orbit.

No idea. Hardly none at all. When I get the urge to go flying down in the weeds, it's because I've found a nice mountain range to fly around in. Skimming over ridge crests, nose-diving over cliffs, flying along valleys between mountain peaks... that's all very much hands-on flying. :)  (And no, it's not terribly easy with just the keyboard. My last joystick was still gameport connection, just before they all switched to USB connection. Not sure if I can even make mine work under Win 7.)

(And these pics may be deceiving — this was not a good planet (or moon) to fly around on — gravity was a bit high, but atmospheric pressure was very high, making sustained controlled flight very frustrating.)

Sometimes I drive the Merlin down low. Good for airless moons.

I just thought of another method I've played around with that might be more what you are looking for — the water-skiing method. ;)

Put your favourite ship in a stable orbit (and preferably as circular as possible — get eccentricity as close to zero as possible). Orient the ship prograde. When that's stabilized, you can switch to horizon level.

Then detach the camera (1, 2, or 3 keys, pick your favourite mode) and move the camera down. Down all the way to the surface (or preferably just above it). The ship will drag the camera around at orbital speed. (You may find that the SE terrain rendering engine may not be able to keep up.)

And, obviously, the higher your orbit, the slower your surface speed will be.

Yes thats exactly what I want to do!  The Merlin?  Can I find that in the Workshop?
Have you found a physical difference with the ships? I tried a bunch of different ones and they all seem to react the same to my changing the main engines and hover engines, etc.  I don't see their physical reactions to changing engine values any differently and thought that they were only cosmetically different from each other?
So I take it my achievement of 4 hours without flying off was something I should be happy about lol.
I cut the main engines down to 0 and kept hover on 3 as that seems to stabilize me from flying off.  I tried hover on 2 but I got nervous because that makes my VS drop off rapidly, and thats something I dont want correct?

Happily with these settings I've got the altitude and elevation under 2900 km now so I'm not flying off!  I just wish there was a way for me to see in the dark lol.  If I accelerate time to make it daylight will that make the ship speed off along the path too?  I wish there was a ship with lights so you could see in the dark.

Oh wow, I didn't know this was possible.  So basically after the ship is in prograde orbit, I can switch to "aircraft mode" (I think that's 3?) and just land that camera close to the surface (I think it ends up 1.50 meters above the surface if I press "Land on object" twice.)  So then I can use the orbiting ship to control that camera?

I love those images!  0980 or 0990?
I throttled my hover down to 2 for an hour to get the VS to be very negative (so I could come down a little) and then back up to 3 to make it stabilize.  Here's what I have so far.  (VS should be as close as possible to 0?)

Levelled off and started to rise again at 2100 km so I lowered hover engines to 2 again.

When I changed hover engines to 2, the lights of the ship somehow turned on lol

Back on again and I can see the Milky Way in my viewport.  But I had the question, how come the VS is so negative and yet my altitude is still so high?  And my velocity is still 7.9 km/sec, how do I get that to go down?
