I had 3 cards die within 6 months of purchase, evga 9800 GTX they were and 2 I know died due to a driver bug which stopped the fans at 0% even though the software reported something like 40%. they spiked at 113ºC and died lol. But truth be told they were bumpgate effected parts so they were likely going to die anyway. 3rd one did just like that without overheating.

I also have a 6800 Ultra with the same issue here.

As for new cards, the RX 570 is the best bang for buck out of any card on the market new atm.

PS what killed your card exactly?  I heard keeping GPU usage in the 50% or less range keeps GPU in good working condition for a decade or more- is that true?
I actually don't know, I launched Quake Champions the first time with suggested graphics and it worked just fine. Then I increased graphics and everything became black.
I don't use the computer everyday, and when I do I never play for more than 2 hours, if I'm not using it just for YouTube or using Unity3D. If I ever stress my GPU is when I use emulators, but I guess most of the work is done by CPU rather than GPU, I use Unity to make mobile games so I don't think that's the cause.
Now if I unplug my GPU the computer works just fine, with GPU connected it's all black except the loading screen and BIOS.
WT*? This shouldn't have happened! Software should be incapable of causing hardware damage imo. It must have been another reason.
In the licence they always write that "they don't take responsibility to any damage", I don't know if it is always true or just in case of improper use.
In my case I can't really tell what happened.

Are you sure it's not a problem of power supply? Maybe the problem is outside GPUs, you have been quite unlucky though  :(

Also there are a few viruses that uses your GPU to mine bitcoins, my friend found out it had one of those.

This was back in 2008 and no it was a known issue with all nvidia GPUs from geforce 7 right to 200 series, maybe as early at 6 quite a lot of 6800s died from what seems the same symptoms too.   Google bumpgate and you soon will know what the scandal is all about. plus nvidia drivers back in the vista days accounted for something like 30% of all crashes, main reason vista got a bad wrap was becasue of this, the drivers back there were absolute trash and also accounted for cards burning up (Fermi GPU fire bug) worth googling too, quite amusing.

Luckily the drivers are mostly ok now days.

No wasn't PSU, I still run that same PSU I did back then with no issue, currently powering a GTX 980 and that hasn't missed a beat hardware wise, has had driver issues with certain drivers and all older direct X versions but I have worked around most of the glitches by using a Vulkan wrapper and Glide APIs.  Only game I haven't been able to fix is FEAR, it has issues with newer nvidia cards when using DX and it only has a DX renderer so its stuck being glitchy. A Radeon card will fix that bug so I have read on forums.

I always had Radeon cards because I though nVidia ones was made for proud "PC gamers" so a bit overpriced, I think I'll wait for a discount for GTX 1060 (maybe around 210€) or take the RX 570.

The last cards I purchased new were those failed 9800 GTXs. My GTX 980 I got as a hand me down cheap from a friend as an interim card while I waited for something better, few months wait turned to some 3-4 years now as we all know how bad the GPU went over the last few years.

For my next card I want to try an AMD card as it has features and drivers I want over the nvidia counter parts plus the value is better.

Hoping the rumored 5800XT comes out soonish, otherwise a 5700XT will do me. The price of nvidia cards here in Australia are even more inflated than the rest of the world while AMD ones are actually at their MSRP (given the conversion rate) so to me it's a no brainer.

If you are considering a 1060, just get the RX 580. its got more vram and its faster and cheaper new, used its even a better deal. I have seen used 580s go for 130 USD or less

It's probably my fault because I downloaded Quake Champions and I couldn't stand the low textures it suggested me, so I tried full-res. The game didn't even load before it all became full black and I couldn't see anything else.

Again WT*? My gpu is constantly running at >99% when playing SE or Elite. Again software should NOT be capable of damaging the hardware. As a precaution though I have reduced its temperature target thermal throttling cap from 82 Co to 76Co, its max energy/power usage from 100% to 90% and finally its max GPU boost clock from 1618MHz to 1582MHz (the default NVIDIA's factory value for the GTX1080ti chip). So my card is slightly underclocked now. I'd expect all the above to be more than enough to extend my GPUs life to at least ~10y even if running 99%@~76Co during gaming. If that is not the case the H*ll with NVIDIA & AMD - I want my money baaacckkkk  :x :x
Oh cool (literally lol).  So the only thing that governs the lifetime of a GPU would be how hot it gets?  Is the same true of a CPU?  Not percent loads in either case?  Mine stay rather cool- both CPU and GPU temps usually stay in the 60s.

2 things determine a semiconductors life, heat cycles not heat itself(if operating in spec) and voltage.

how does one measure heat cycles?  is that basically how many times the temperature of the SC rises and falls?

Bought RX 570 and works very well! SE is going very fast!
Terrain generation is almost instantaneous.

Kind of, it does matter how many times the temperature changes but it's also important how fast it changes.

Just ordered an LG 32GK650 monitor.  Can't wait for it to arrive :D.   Going to be so much better than my 19" 900p AOC monitor from 2008 haha.  All my other larger monitors have long since died and only this cheapo AOC has stood the test of time.

LG & Samsung makes the best monitors out there imho, their images are so sharp and well balanced

How can one tell when their monitor is about to die?  I have a Sony monitor from 2005 I'm using and a Viewsonic monitor from 2012.  The Sony monitor looks a bit dimmer than the other one, but otherwise works fine.  How long do the newer monitors last?  I had an old 2001 Viewsonic that died in 2012 (which was replaced with the newer Viewsonic.)

They can die in various ways. My viewsonic 28" died in 2 years, its was the PSU, replaced that and got another 3 months and then the main board died, was a big waste of $1k that one. They wouldn't honor the warranty when it first died, first and last time I'll touch a viewsonic.

my Samsung one, 20" lasted about 8 year and then got the LCD cancer as I call it, starts from a single pixel and over a few hours to days the black spreads out over the LCD, its physically visible even when off so its some weird chemical breakdown.

My AOC from 2008 is still going well and I do have a Dell 4:3 17" from 2001 that works fine as well.

Most screens will slowly degrade over time but in may take years to even notice anything if nothing at all. My Dell one seems overly bright and the blacks have faded as well as uniformity has degraded but it took over 10 years for that to be noticeable.   Newer panels I would imagine should fare well, the panel itself.  That said I have seen benQ monitors go completely blue after a few months.  At work we had about 4 of them do this. The white LEDs in the back light went blue. I guess the yellow phosphor failed in the LEDs ?

Thats something I was wondering about- do LED have a shorter lifespan than older LCD?  I actually have a BenQ LED 22" still boxed up, haven't used it yet, waiting for one of the two older LCDs I have to go dark- now I'm worried that the BenQ wont last as long as my older monitors have.

You've replaced the PSU and main board of a monitor?
