I switched from AMD/ATI after the 5870 because SpaceEngine seemed to benefit from having Nvidia and Nvidia offered the best hardware I could afford.
My 1080 Ti is the first GPU in maybe a decade that hasnt been a disappointment, 980 Ti came close but had some issues in 1080p.

I know that feeling. I got a water cooled top end 980 from EVGA. I only play old games on it now as it felt too slow on the only 2 modern games I played, now that is 1 , SE. The other was UT4 and it's slow as in that on even low res, game was abandon in pre alpha anyway hence why I don't play it anymore.
Tried out a 1080 recently and it also felt mediocre.
The last card that felt genuine fast was the 6800 Ultra back in the day. I even built a system this year based on one to revisit that nostalgic feeling of gaining few 100% from a system 3 year prior to it. Those were the days when upgrading saw astronomical gains, I miss them so much.
Playing period correct games on it the FPS is far higher than what the games of today on the high end hardware does now if you known what I mean.
