Unfortunately instead it is only raining, threatening the chance of a fun night of Trick or Treating.

The earliest 6 inch snowfall in the recorded history of NYC occurred yesterday and it completely shut the city down!

NYC just got hit by a surprise snowstorm that was supposed to be rain and there was no plowing and everyone was stuck for 6 hours..... 6 inches of snow fell during rush hour, we last had six inches of snow on April 6 of the previous season and now the first 6 inch snowfall of the new season on November makes it one of the shortest gaps ever for here.

Well the crazy weather continues!  We now had our coldest temperature ever recorded in the month of November!  13 degrees here, down to 5 degrees in eastern Long Island.  Upstate NY, Binghampton and Syracuse both had their earliest below zero temperature on record and first time it's ever happened in November!

My mother knew someone who had a ball lightning come in to their house.  Wish I could remember the details of the story she described.  Very weird phenomenon.

It's amazing that when they try to replicate it in the lab it only lasts for a few fractions of a second but in real life conditions, it can last for much longer.  I wonder how?  I've read reports about it spinning like a ball, rolling along power lines, going through walls, and exploding.  The famous case was when a group of scientists was coming home from a convention and it came right in from the front of the plane rolled down the aisle and passed through the back.  Before then it was thought to be some sort of myth.

The huge chunks of ice thing is interesting too, sometimes they fall from a clear blue sky.  It cant be from airplanes because the chunks have been analyzed and they dont have any of the chemicals used in plane lavatories.   They are clear and dont have the bluish tint of airplane emissions. Also, there are cases of it going back centuries lol.

The third really mysterious weather phenomenon are heat bursts.  Temperatures as high as 189 degrees have been recorded with burnt crops and even burnt wooden doors from various places, heat bursts occur when thunderstorms collapse and die and heat is released in a massive downburst of wind.  The kind of heatbursts I'm talking about are extremely rare though and there's only a few cases of temps of 140 and higher being reached.

Another rather neat atmospheric anomaly is the 'star jelly'. I thought that was strange, but then I found this article. I think the coolest thing about all of these cases are that they are soon explained by atmospheric sciences, with explanations that are actually a lot more cool then the conjectures made by the confused people who found them.

We've also seen a massive uptick in rainfall and humidity here in NY over the last couple of decades, not good for the sinuses or bug levels.

2018 is already the wettest year in Wilmington's history.  The all-time annual record that stood for over 140 years was broken on September 16th during Hurricane Florence, almost three and a half months before the end of the year.  Every raindrop since then has continued to extend the record, which is now approaching 100 inches!  A few climate statistics will show just how unimaginable this year's rain has been.

This year Wilmington has recorded the most number of days ever with daily rainfall greater than 1.50, 3.00, and 4.00 inches.
Total rainfall from just the 17 wettest days this year: 58.96" --more rain than in an entire typical year!
96 inches is eight feet -- the standard depth of the "deep end" of a backyard swimming pool
Why has 2018 been so wet? A large part of it was Hurricane Florence's record-breaking 23.02" of rain at the Wilmington airport September 13th through 16th.  This is the largest rainfall total from any single weather event in Wilmington's history, handily beating Hurricane Floyd's 19.06" rainfall total back in 1999.  According to NOAA Precipitation Frequency Estimates, that much rain falling at Wilmington in just four days occurs, on average, once every 1,000 years. 

A steady stream of non-tropical low pressure systems, cold and warm fronts, and daytime thunderstorms also brought well-above normal rainfall amounts in January, May, June, July, and November.  Most of North Carolina has recorded well-above normal rainfall this year.

Our local observations show the last five years (2014 through 2018) have all had above-normal rainfall in Wilmington, and are collectively the wettest five year period since records began in 1871.

Hardly surprising I guess, but it sure annoys me when some people try and convince me that global warming can't be happening because we've got 'lots of snow this year'. It makes me facepalm.

On a related note, the first snows dropped here in BC. We've already got a few inches.

Yes, climate change can happen with lots of snow, that's been the case with NYC, but the temps have still been warmer than normal.
