Unusual weather

13 Jan 2022 01:57

First 24h through, and as predicted, massive amounts of rain, snowmelt, landslides and flooding, in addition wind and very rough sea.  Buildings swept to sea by waves created from rock avalanches reported.  Also ice jams in rivers worsening the situation.  Mountain passes closed (but this is not unusual in January).  Worst might be still to come.  148 mm from 7 am yesterday to 7 am today in Tomrefjord is impressive.  This is at sea level so probably more at higher elevations.

Looks like a great number of meteorological stations set new precipitation records.  On my dry side of the mountains I noted a couple of record high temperatures for January: +10.1 °C overnight (for some reason Foehn winds appear to give higher temperatures at night than day) and a daily mean temperature of +6.5 °C.  My records go back to 2003.  This is pretty warm at 60° latitude in January!

Wow that sounds like some exciting weather over there.  Over here we are going from extreme cold to rain as an atmospheric river system turns into a coastal storm with extremely high winds and heavy rain (snow at higher elevations 100-200 miles west of here)

We had a lot of Minus temps here in January, more so than usual.
