Space isn't cold; space is nothing. The medium that permeates it is usually cold but is sometimes extremely hot.
Andromeda is only going to crash into the Milky Way only in the same sense two clouds can "crash" into each other. They'll pass through each other and become an elliptical galaxy. The chance of two stars coming near each other won't increase much, it'll only be as dangerous as the amount of danger the Sun is in right now of approaching another star. The most Earth will be concerned about is disturbances in the Oort cloud sending debris inwards towards the tiny part of the Sun's gravitational influence that the planets occupy.
