A hypothetical improvement survey.

23 Nov 2023 22:06

In dealing with the Solar Systems planets especially, I was wandering how many of you with older systems would have sacrificed in various areas in life if it meant higher detail terrain. Image tiles and bump maps alike..... So please share this if you would for numbers sake. How many would wish to download a 400 or 600 gb Earth if you had the opportunity. Would you simply pass and stay with the Ultra planets or would you spend money to upgrade and or buy extra hard drive space? Thank you. Ill submit my answer after others come in.

Some actual poles and stats would be interesting and may in the future prove to be helpful to developers.

That's a nasty amount of drive space to spend on hardly any detail. 600gb of surface detail will not make your Earth 100x more detailed than 6gb of surface detail due to the square-cube law. You might as well just buy Microsoft Flight Simulator; SpaceEngine is not made for detailed simulations of Earth.

I was working with this, but because of personal problems (most importantly though), and lack of storage, I had to stop that project for a while, did you download my mod of Hawaii Islands? :) I would like to make an entire Earth with that detail, but not all the areas has that level of detail in surface.
Hello, I LOVE lasagna and Space Engine. ♥

While the idea of a highly detailed Earth is intriguing, I think I would pass on downloading a 400 or 600 GB file. My current system handles the Ultra planets well enough, and I don't feel the need to upgrade or spend extra money on additional storage. I'd prefer to enjoy the existing detail without the hassle of managing such large files.

I would go for full coverage of the cloud texture and polar ice caps before trying to increase the resolution of the texture.

The universe is a mystery and we are constantly exploring. 400 or 600 GB is quite a large amount, far exceeding the usual size of files or applications that users often download. Downloading such a large file requires a stable and high-speed Internet connection to avoid interruptions during the download process.

This is a completely incorrect formulation of the problem itself. 600 GB is not needed to create a nice looking Earth (and wouldn't help with that approach anyway). There is a project called Outerra, in which the entire Earth has long been made in fairly good graphics, with trees, shadows, clouds and waves. But it doesn't weigh 600 GB. The Earth shouldn't be stored in the game as a giant primitive set of PNGs, instead it should combine textures with procedural generation, in which case even without Ultra dlc it will look as detailed as fictional planets. Though the accuracy will not be ideal, because the program will come up with the details on its own. I think it will be most noticeable with the outlines of islands, but in any case it is much better than a glossy ball with no details like now. In addition, Ultra DLC will still be relevant - by connecting to procedural generation, it will increase the accuracy of geography.

Also we must not forget that in addition to Earth, we have the rest of the solar system, which requires the same amount of details. I honestly don’t understand why after so many years of development this hasn’t been done yet. This task seems to be a priority; without this visiting the solar system is meaningless.
