Our beautiful planet Earth: Voyages & Journeys

14 Oct 2022 05:26

Here you can talk about your recent (or less recent) voyages, trips, etc.

What's the best place you've seen so far?
I'm a big fan of nature (I'm a scout for this reason) and I love beautiful landscapes, but when I saw England some months ago I just fell in love.

I'm so much in love with the architecture, the language, the people (some are a bit snobbish but many are soo friendly and funny). I'm not sure if I could live my entire life there though, there are too many things I love of Italy, but surely now my dream is living a long period in England, like one month or more, to visit more cities and do more stuff.
Many people say they prefer Scotland because England looks "sad" but for me is the opposite, Scotland of course is amazing for its culture and castles, and many things, but it's too much dark and gray for me. No offence of course! What do you guys think? Is there a place you like? Have you been to Scotland or England?

Surprised we didn't have a thread for this already, reminds me I still need to process my Washington DC pictures from my trip with Antza and Harb.

I'm a big fan of nature (I'm a scout for this reason) and I love beautiful landscapes, but when I saw England some months ago I just fell in love.
I've never lived in England (the closest would be 5 - 6 months in Dublin, Ireland).  A few decades ago, I found English cities, London in particular, to suffer from extreme air pollution, but that has improved vastly recently.  I was supposed to be in London this week, but it got cancelled due to travel budget restrictions this quarter in my company.  I also prefer nature over cities, and England is a bit too overpopulated to my taste.  There is very little nature left besides cities and cultivated land, but what's left I can certainly enjoy.  As for living in England, I think one concern would be some things I don't understand about English homes, like: Carpets everywhere.  Why on earth?  It creates dust, difficult to clean, and covering the entire bathroom floor, or even the kitchen floor, with carpets is just disgusting.  Why not insulate houses properly instead to avoid cold floors.  Then pipes could be fitted inside to avoid them freezing all the time... And most English homes look pretty much the same.  Brick, front door, hall with kitchen in the end, living room to the side and stair up to second floor sleeping rooms.

I've been to Scotland as well, but only Shetland.  Which is rural and weathered, and interesting for a Norwegian to visit, because so many place names which probably make no sense to the average native English speaker are perfectly understandable for Norwegians.

As for Italy, the country has some stunning scenery, like the Alps in the north, and active volcanos.  As for Italian cities, there is a north-south border.  North of Rome there is order, things are clean.  Going to Naples and further south, however, there is chaos, much noise.  One of the most interesting things about Italy is the history, of course.  I've studied Latin and being able to read stuff written more than two thousand years ago is fascinating when in Italy.

As a foreigner that's something I like, they have a specific style you immediately recognize (the red bricks, etc). But yeah living in a place where every house looks the same must be a bit boring.

This is very interesting.

Indeed. As my parents are from Taranto I see many things of southern Italy very similar to Arabic culture. The love for food, the architecture, the talkativeness and friendliness of people, the chaos of cities. Here on the north people are way more reserved and have a culture that is a bit more similar to that of Germany and France.
