could something like fog be used to simulate the effect of smaller particles? we don't really need to model every particle down to the centimetre scale (and smaller) here!
There already is fog for smaller particles, but you still have to render larger ones (tens of centimeters to meters), and that's a huge amount to render.

I got the feeling my RX 570 won't be enough to get 10 FPS, it is already struggling with surface generation
The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition.

Maybe it could be that you need a newer cpu, yours it's from the 4th generation, change it to a newer one and maybe the problem could be solved

Will you be adding the arcs on Neptune?

Could you add an arc to Neptune or Saturn? (Example: Methone Ring Arc)
English is not my native language.

Well it's nearly the 1st birthday of the Anniversary article, and we've not got much of anything except for the rings, so hopefully not bad.

Some side work with atmospheric acattering. I tried to implement alternative code, which performs scattering integration on-the-fly in the planet/sky shader, rather than use precomputed scattering tables (textures). It solves a lot of issues with artifacts and inability to change such paramters as atmosphere opacity (optical depth). The drawback is a low performance, so some hybrid method should be used. Probably this method will be used with 3D clouds anyway, because the old code is somewhat incompatible with them.

New code features the ozone layer. Compare with and without the ozone:

Artifact-free sunset in autoexposure mode:

And a killer feature: I can specify a custom density profile for any of component (Rayleigh, Mie (aerosols) and ozone). Here is a Mie scattering turned into a haze layer at some height. This will be very useful for Venus and Titan. Screenshots are showing descending through the haze layer. It is dark here, but can be of any color:

No progress since Summer, we are focused on 3D rings now. As you can see, atmospheric scattering does not affects clouds, this is why new scattering code is needed.

Don't have much to say, do appreciate you being open about the development ;)

Thank you so much for these screenshots. What do you think how much work needs to be done for new scaterring code?

We where talking about the 3d clouds but int the rocky planets, what about gas planets? Their bands will move or still stay quiet?

Thanks for posting here (and not just on Discord). Looks awesome.

So, if the atmosphere code is to be rewritten to get atmospheric effects on the clouds, does that mean that surface bases (and ships in atmosphere) will finally be rendered with atmospheric effects?
