I've found the main menu star cluster

10 May 2021 18:12

Hey yall,
I've found the star cluster that can be seen in the main menu. I didn't manage to find the exact system from which it can be seen though, but maybe together we can do it.

Here's the URL for it: se://v=990&n=Main%20Menu%20Star%20Cluster&b=RSC%200%2D7%2D1384784%2D2225%2D1258%2D0%2D0%2D24%202&p=RSC%200%2D7%2D1384784%2D2225%2D1258%2D0%2D0%2D24&t=+25841CF4603CAE2A53189A17FC&x=-15B1CD4CBD7D5BA09D89829B135A&y=+3E73E3AE23B7988397A6EE833FDB&z=-16556DDBDC1ABD81811EBDD55684&qx=0.3232274&qy=0.5651876&qz=0.5256857&qw=-0.5474866&u=4.275&m=1&s=1&f=0&e=0

And yes this is probably the rarest random discovery in my life since the Earth is 3.82 Gly away from it. I found it by accident - I changed the brightness of the random nebula around the cluster and when I entered the game the next day, the nebula on the main menu was extremely bright. I've tried to pinpoint the location of the planet that can be seen in the menu but to no avail.

The main menu cluster is called "Skylias Stellar Nursery" and the star system is just called "Menu Star".

Well, this is true and it is quite strange because both the Skylias Stellar Nursery and the one that I linked look very alike, and in both cases, I don't see the nebulas that are supposed to be around those clusters and in the main menu. I have made the nebula around the linked star cluster invisible when I discovered that it is the same nebula as in the main menu. Maybe the linked star cluster and the one that you provided are the mirror copies of each other located in the galaxies light-years apart.
Here's how the main menu supposed to look like:

Here's how my main menu looks like and I've only removed the nebula around the cluster that I linked which is 3.82 Gly away from the Skylias Stellar Nursery:

Also, it is possible that the Space Engine has changed because I made this post nearly one year after my discovery. However, I remember that my main menu had a nebula around the star cluster before I decided to make it extremely bright and then invisible after I discovered that it made my whole main menu extremely white and bright.

SE's volumetric nebulae use a limited number of models, including the "Skylias Stellar Nursery". Procedural nebulae do not have a specified model, so SE will pick one of the nebulae models at random. These special models may also be used by the procedural nebulae. If the nebula model changes (e.g. if SE is updated or a mod that extends the nebula model is installed), the model of these procedural nebulae will also change. There are many other nebulae in the SE universe that also use the "Skylias Stellar Nursery" model, and they also look like copies of each other.

Oh man and here I thought I made a very rare discovery. Thanks for the explanation nonetheless. Btw do you happen to know how large is the number of those nebulae models?
