Yes it's still alive and well and the developer actually posted in a couple of threads yesterday.Is the project still alive? Last news and update was on July 20 and since that developer doesn't even appear to answer questions
Rings are the result of several months of development, as well as debugging.Rings are pretty fine but this is the only significant thing done for this entire year.

How do you get that virtual ram? I'm only with 8gb and a 3.7 dual core processor of 8th generation and 128 mb of video and I can "run" the SE that is before the volumetric rings update lol I just cant go to the surfaces of procedural planets otherwise my pc will explode.Scary lol, do you think the program will use more memory then? There is a real direct connection for how long the program will run for me before crashing and how much virtual memory I have reserved......right now I have 320 GB virtual RAM across two hard drives to run the program for 76.5 hours before crashing. At 96 GB it was only 22 hours and at 128 GB it was 28 hours while at 150 GB it was 34 hours. Unfortunately now that I boosted it all the way to 320 GB I also experience a slight slow down in Windows start up time (4 minutes vs 3 minutes). But that's okay for the longer run times for SE, I dont want any more of a slow down though.

Popping back in because I was curious about development, and if this is true about 3D clouds, I wonder if he will use a similar method to the rings. Since the ring objects are just a post-processing trick if I remember correctly, that could work with clouds perhaps? While I understood why he was a team of one a while ago, I wonder why he hasn't expanded to a small team yet? Perhaps the complexities involved? A personal reason? Since he is making something that goes beyond what should be the responsibility of one person, while noble, it is still playing with fire (for their own stress/work-load, and circumstance). Oh well, I'll check back in a few years if not sooner.To my knowledge, Vladimir is working on the development of 3D volumetric clouds. But development is progressing slowly because the current version of the program bugs also needs to be fixed.
Plus, he still works alone, has only a few helpers, and already has a family and child, because he can spend less time on the Space Engine project.
Rings rendering is not a "post processing trick", it is a volumetric ray marching shader that is integrated with the scene.
