Interesting. In the ancient world poetry was always "sung", but "songs" covered more than what we call "songs" today. Ancient poetry following strict rules of rhythm, and I've imagined the melody to be for the most part improvised and pretty monotone, so watching this video was interesting. Ancient poetry is in a sense a bit similar to rap music of today, except that the ancient rules were stricter, and different. Ancient Greek was a tone languages whereas most European languages today are stress languages. The Romans struggled a bit with this, as they applied the Greek rules to Latin, which is a stress language, and the Latin poetry sung must have sounded a bit foreign, though some additional rules were added to avoid it sounding too awkward.
