I think basically everything Joe Hisaishi has done is worth listening, not only his work for Studio Ghibli :)
I never listened anything outside his OST for Studio Ghibli but yeah, that track is pure art.  8-)

Another Japanese guy that influenced me a lot is Nobuo Uematsu, it's a completely different style but it's the one I try to follow when I make music.

Here's a reconstruction of ancient Greek music (fifth century):

Interesting.  In the ancient world poetry was always "sung", but "songs" covered more than what we call "songs" today.  Ancient poetry following strict rules of rhythm, and I've imagined the melody to be for the most part improvised and pretty monotone, so watching this video was interesting.  Ancient poetry is in a sense a bit similar to rap music of today, except that the ancient rules were stricter, and different.  Ancient Greek was a tone languages whereas most European languages today are stress languages.  The Romans struggled a bit with this, as they applied the Greek rules to Latin, which is a stress language, and the Latin poetry sung must have sounded a bit foreign, though some additional rules were added to avoid it sounding too awkward.

Very nice. But just think what we could do with this with a good drummer and me on an 8-string bass. :)

A pleasantly persistent ear worm.  Or I might just like weird music. :P
