Watsisname, it's not a frame rate problem! I'll give you the math to prove it!

Distance = 5.01 AU
Time = 30 Minutes
Calculated Speed = 416380 km/s
Calculated Acceleration = 462.3 km/s^2

Inputed into Space Engine:
Acceleration = 556.221 km/s^2 (closest I could get to with the mouse wheel)
Actual speed (from a single press of the "w" key) = 24.xx km/s and this speed remains pretty much constant until further presses of the "w" key are used!

Now can you see my problem? It's not a frame rate problem and yes the math may be correct, however there is something missing to tie it all together!

OK, I think I got it!
1st speed needs to be calculated (v=d/t)
then the acceleration needs to be calculated v/.01 to km/s^2, au/s^2, ly#s^2 etc(I use .01 as the time to get from 0 motion upto required velocity, i.e. the press of the key "w" to set it in motion)
That then gives me the value I need to set the mouse wheel in Space Engine to the correct acceleration needed in one press of a key to get to the destination in approximately the required time (thus where frame rate etc comes into it)
Be so much easier if I could just key in the required speed and hit go!

Gee Harliquin, I've understood the problem since 6 posts ago.

Please try this experiment.  In spaceship mode, set your acceleration to 1LY/s while in a galaxy, with the default render settings and limiting magnitude of +8.  Apply that acceleration constantly for 10 seconds of real time.  After those 10 seconds, what should your velocity be?  (10 seconds)*(1LY/s^2) = 10LY/s, right?  Well, try it and see what you actually get.

Now repeat the experiment with the limiting magnitude set to +13.  What do you find your resulting velocity is, then?

In physics, the velocity you have after some period of constant acceleration is your acceleration times the amount of time it was applied for.  But in Space Engine's ship mode, that's not what you get -- the velocity you actually get depends on your framerate.  That's why this does not work.

In order to make it work, you would have to calculate your "effective acceleration", based on what your framerate is.  This is probably doable, except it will change depending on what's being rendered during your journey.

Watsisname, it's fine now. I've figured out exactly what I need to do! (see previous post)
But thanks for your posts! I learned quite a bit from them :)

Watsisname, you were correct, the speed does change.  I wonder why that is and if there is a way to correct for it.

Happy Valentine's day everyone!
(I'm a nerd, so I don't get valentines except for this heart from Pluto :P )

Watsisname, i watched that video a long time ago on YouTube, but i forgot about it.
The extreme drag part is just crazy, it even beats Danny2462's videos in funniness :)

Bringing the kids (5, 9 & 10 yrs) to Svalbard tomorrow Monday.  We only get one full day before leaving on Wednesday.  Looks like we're not getting the perfect weather for a hike out of town.  It's going to be tough.  One full line on the wind arrows is 5 m/s.

Looks like "adventure" weather more than comfort weather.  But at least that's not what you had during the eclipse last time you were there. :)

Stay warm and be safe!
