Re: Science and Astronomy Questions

Personally, I think cloud is the right descriptor — after all is it not spherical in shape? Whereas a belt is more or less a ring. And where in the definition of "cloud" is there mention of a specific density? :) Exactly. :)  We use belts to describe diffuse but disk-like distribution of ...

TRAPPIST, please stop creating multiple accounts, making new threads for the same content, and replying to things that are several years old and irrelevant now. This is against forum rules and they will be removed. You can keep your mods in this thread.

Re: Science and Astronomy Questions

A long time ago I did a simple calculation related to that. If you took every object in the Oort Cloud and squeezed them together into a flat, face-on disk at the same distance, how large would it appear on the sky? (In other words, what fraction of the sky do all the Oort Cloud objects take up, tog...

Re: Astrophotography

I actually have an idea that I should just set the cameras up in timelapse mode and set them to start taking pictures about 30 seconds before totality until 30 seconds after totality-- what do you think about that, Wat? I'll use the settings you recommended and just let the cameras do their thing w...

Re: Astrophotography

Yes, eclipse wind is a real thing and has been verified by comparison of measurements to models.  However, it's not a very easy thing for one observer on the ground to notice (I couldn't sense it unambiguously in 2017 at Madras). It is more of a small systematic change in wind speed and direction ac...

Re: Astrophotography

Can I see it and capture it without the filter? I saved what you wrote last time so I can remember it-- I have about 30 seconds at the end of totality where I can still take unfiltered pictures and view the eclipse without a filter I think. You can only see and capture it without the filter. It onl...

Re: Astrophotography

I can't wait!  The closest I've ever come to seeing anything like that was that 90% eclipse in May 1994 (is there a way to check if I got the month and year right?)-- the sky was mostly cloudy but they were high and midlevel clouds and what I saw did bear a resemblance to a ring, but it was thicker...

Re: Astrophotography

Wat I thought of something even more exciting!  This might rank infinity/10 on your list!  A supernova exploding, being visible in daylight AND getting occulted by a total solar eclipse?! Seeing a bright supernova under any conditions would be pretty cool, but the visual impression of seeing one du...

Re: Astrophotography

That the timescale indeed seems to be in the millions of years does seem reasonable.  However, an eclipse happening during the middle of the occultation is no fun.  We need the planet to touch the rim of the Moon during the eclipse.  The Moon's shadow takes some time to travel across the Earth, but...

Re: Astrophotography

Thanks Wat, you've got me well prepared for the solar eclipse and for the next occultation. Happy to help getting prepared. Best of luck seeing it! I'm particularly excited about Mars occultations by the Moon because of the contrast in color, but also about Saturn occultations because of the rings....

Re: Astrophotography

The perfect shot would be an occultation of a planet during a solar eclipse.  I wonder how often that happens, whether the timescale would be once in a million years or less.  It would be a challenging exposure, but I think doable. That would be spectacular. The best ones would be either Venus or J...

Re: Science and Astronomy News

I thought you would like to read that Nautilus paper because it was interdisciplinary research done by both an astronomer and a neuroscientist.  It's a long paper but well worth the read. I can't tell you how many people have been led to believe or at least wonder if the universe could be a conscio...

Re: Science and Astronomy News

The fact that it resembles brain structure, is that also because of gravity or is it a combination of both gravity and electromagnetic force, Wat? The similarity between appearance of the cosmic web and neurons in a brain is a coincidence.  The cosmic web forms purely by gravity. Electromagnetic f...

Re: Astrophotography

" Do you think I might need a tracking mount for either (or both) of these (especially for the one at 2000mm?)" Not strictly required. You can capture all but the outermost details of the corona within 2 seconds, and the exposure time needed for prominences is extremely short, you shouldn...

Re: Science and Astronomy News

Maybe this is the real reason that the brain resembles the structure of the universe so much-- isn't the universe a giant cosmic quantum computer and in its early stages when it was tiny quantum processes forged its eventual structure? No. The cosmic web structure forms simply because of gravity. S...
