Science and Astronomy Questions

Thanks for the answer, I did not expect my universe to crunch itself so soon. :) Regarding the Hubble constant, 72.5 was a random value I found on wiki and 68 serves the thought experiment just as well. Here are some complementary questions I have.

I like your big bounce scenario too, would it be ...

Science and Astronomy Questions

Watsisname, I was thinking about a universe which starts with a big bang, inflates and then instead of slowly expaning as our universe does, it slowly contracts. But I'll await what the other scenarios would look like.

Science and Astronomy Questions

What if the universe was contracting instead of expanding ever since the big bang? Meaning, how would we see the universe if the Hubble constant was not 72.5 (km/s)/Mpc, but -72.5 (km/s)/Mpc ?

Would very far galaxies be approaching us faster than light? What would be the proper distance to the ...

I think you are right. Deccan Traps in india and the Siberian Traps consist of 1 million cubic kilometers or volcanic rock and 4 million km 3 respectively. But from what I've read about these, I deduce that the eruptive activity probably lasted for a long while, instead of a single eruption. I have ...

Science and Astronomy Questions

Watsisname , to sum up what this wikipedia page says, volcanic explosivity index (VEI) measures the power of a single volcanic eruption based on the volume of ejecta it produces, regardless whether it is lava, ash, gas or other materials.

It is a decadic logarithmic scale. Ten times more ejecta ...

Science and Astronomy Questions

Are Martian volcanoes actually supervolcanoes?

On Earth, tectonic plates move over hot spots so that a supervolcano leaves behind a chain of calderas, but the terrain does not elevate much, if at all. Since Mars does not have plate tectonics, hot spots can pile lava up into enormous heights over ...

DoctorOfSpace , while we are at black hole mergers, scientists have observed a handful of stellar mass (more or less) black hole gravitational waves events. How often, statistically speaking, do binary supermassive black holes merge in the observable universe? I assume such events to be associated ...

Sci-Fi (and other genre) Movies & TV Series

I haven't seen the new Predator movie yet though.
You mean the new one that came out this year (2018)?
Yes, that one. Thanks for input. I guess I'll see for myself soon.

Sci-Fi (and other genre) Movies & TV Series

Stargate since childhood, I like all the movies and series, including SGU.

I haven't seen much of TOS, but I like Star Trek in general, with DS9 being the best in my opinion.

Regarding Star Wars, both originals and prequels occasionally make me want to re-watch again and again :) but I harshly ...

Dreams you've had

I had one interesting dream today in the morning.

I was on Mars leading an anti-Earth rebellion. I recall commanding one of my underlings to close every spaceport to ships inbound from Earth. My command base was a large pyramid-like structure armed to the teeth. The air was breathable, but rusty ...

I've read through the links and concluded that even though the universe contains virtually limitless amount of resources, a civilization with exponential growth pattern would not be able to sustain itself. We can see it happening with humans. Overabundance of resources would lead to ...

My take on FTL-capable alien civilizations

As discussed in this FFT's thread, over time, very small perturbations in the orbit of Uranus were measured, allowing the discovery of Neptune. Without computers, to emphasize. The amount of data and the time span required amazes me. It was nearly ...

Science and Astronomy Questions

Many super-Earth sized planets we have found outside of the Solar system are speculated to contain a lot of water. This implies a ~100 kilometers deep ocean bottomed by high pressure ice. I remember reading somewhere, that the ocean would be mineral-poor, lowering the chance of life arising there ...
