Re: Astrophotography

I wonder if dew and frost can damage optics or electronics or do they return to normal if left unused for awhile until they warm up like you said?

Also, I am considering putting a lot of my excess equipment that I don't use very frequently in my garage, which has no heating. Would that damage any ...

Re: Astrophotography

I have a problem in temperatures below 0 C with batteries also, so I have bought a variety of back up power including usb power, dummy batteries to ac and cig lighter (to be powered by car battery), even battery holders that take AA batteries.
I good trick is to keep batteries in a pocket close to ...

Re: Astrophotography

Wow where were you located for that eclipse, Mid? That sounds as cold as any temperature I've ever experienced....my coldest was -3 F or about -20 C so about as cold as that and it was difficult for me to be outside for more than a few minutes.
That was in Svalbard, at 78N. I made this video ...

Re: Astrophotography

I actually plan on setting everything up in the early part of the partial phase and start looking around the environment around 3 PM or so (which is 20 minutes before totality in the northeast.) I want to see what kind of temperature changes there will be and if it gets windy (I noticed this in the ...

Re: Astrophotography

Something else just occurred to me.  During an occultation of a star by a planet, asteroid or another planet's moon-- could that help determine how thick the atmosphere of the occulting body is and what it's composed of?
Yes.

Re: Astrophotography

What's the probability for a total solar eclipse to happen at the same time? Well, the totalities are much shorter, so it's the duration of the occultations that matters. The probability for an eclipse to happen at the same time is the fraction of the year that an occultation lasts (let's say 6 ...

Re: Astrophotography

The perfect shot would be an occultation of a planet during a solar eclipse.  I wonder how often that happens, whether the timescale would be once in a million years or less.  It would be a challenging exposure, but I think doable.

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

Not so much over here in Norway.  So far just an early start compared to 21/22, which was low, and 20/21 was non-existant.  The graph shows weekly new hospitalisations.

I got my flu shot, but I'm done with covid shots after three of them.

Re: Astrophotography

I find 2400mm good for Moon shots. For a total solar eclipse, however, something around 500mm sounds good in order to capture the corona.

Solar eclipses are definitely more difficult to photograph since you need a filter during the partial phase, and because of the high dynamic range of the corona ...

Re: Show off your work

It took some effort to work through the data for the meteor cluster that appeared over southern Scandinavia a week ago. I've compiled the observations here . Now people can get involved to figure out the meteoroid story. I think there will be a paper on this event. 24 meteors in less than 10 seconds ...
