Have you made sure "texture compression" is unchecked?

I recall having something like this happen when I had it enabled.

Am I missing something but doesn't it need to be combined with a fuel to be explosive? My understanding is ammonia nitrate is just an oxidizer?

I'm pretty familiar with garnet, not in that environment but in industry as a blasting media. 

I have had a lot of car parts garnet blasted over the years. It looks like sand of the same red/purple colour as the ones you found.

Only good comets I have seen was c/2006 p1 McNaught back in 2007, it was lucky it was a southern hemisphere one, most of the other good ones have be northern ones.

Steam didn't update mine even with auto updates on, had to manually apply the update in the downloads section.  Maybe that could also be your problem?
