Re: How would Space Engine look if everything was ray traced?

Is hardware ray tracing even possible under OpenGL? It's pretty pointless to push something that the underlying platform doesn't even facilitate.
But I guess a team should then be hired to convert all API calls to Vulkan, huh?

As for the hypothetical question. I speak from no experience, but I ...

Gamma-correct star rendering

It seems to me that some aspects of the rendering aren't being properly handled in terms of linear and gamma spaces. There are multiple clues of this, but a prominent example is how the bloom effect of stars has a mismatch with the body color. If the in-game gamma slider is turned up to 2, this ...

Rendering the galaxy with nothing but stars

So I decided to push my puny PC to the limits and see how many stars I could get Space Engine to show on the screen by increasing the star magnitude setting. To my surprise, I was able to get the semblance of the Milky Way whilst having the galaxy display option disabled. I had to tune and mod the ...

Gamma correction for planet textures: parameter in catalog scripts and slider in the editor

Is this only applied on an individual basis? After having played around in .990 for some time, I noticed some quirks that I suspect can be attributed to imperfect handling of gamma. For instance ...

SpaceEngine 0.990 Release

The black-body colouration option caught my interest. I assume CIE 709 corresponds with the Rec. 709 gamut, and by extension, sRGB. I wonder what plain CIE is, then?

Help with creating Mods and Addons

It seems like one or more of the file packages are locked away? I am prompted with a password request upon opening some of the files for modding.

Image Dump

Are you using a script to generate those large arrays of orbiting bodies around a star or a black hole in those orderly patterns? Doesn't look chaotic enough to have been placed manually.

Mods and Addons - Requests, suggestions and ideas

Is there any mod that overhauls the star/universe shaders? I made my own modifications to accommodate a high render-distance, and the result can safely be called splendid in my estimation, even though it's all assembled together with metaphorical duct tape.

SpaceEngine TODO

I'm wondering how much a deferred shading pipeline will benefit Space Engine. With so much of the universe being transparent, and only a few lights illuminating celestial objects at most, I can't imagine it being a quantum leap.

General suggestions for SpaceEngine

I'd love to see some configurable tonemapping. The one in use has a nice balance between dynamic range and contrast, but it's a master of none.

Luminosity of supergiant stars

Speaking of supergiants, why is WOH G64 the brighest star by far? Approaching the LMC, I expected a certain Wolf-Rayet star to present itself above others instead.
