Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

It's the immune system at work, yes.  The second Moderna shot seems to be like that for most people, to varying degree.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

There will be new waves and variants.  This is what viruses do.  The question is whether we're going to care.  If the vaccines work, the seriousness should be somewhere between a cold and a flu for the vaccinated. I had my second Moderna shot yesterday.  The first gave me no ill effects whatsoever. ...

Qr Bbpost It made me wonder why bother with the AZ shot at all

The simple explanation could be that a lot of countries ordered huge loads of AZ, and I somehow doubt that AZ accepts refunds.

Asteroids, meteors, and meteorites

I noticed.  Extremely unlikely that it's related.  These things happen many times per year somewhere in the world, but many years apart for one particular area.

Qr Bbpost Did you have one like this last year around this time too?

There was one in Sweden in November, which resulted in the recovery of a 14 kg iron meteorite.  This time it meteor was likely smaller, yet the airblast seems to have been stronger.

Qr Bbpost early Perseids?

No, Perseids are fast and disintegrate at high altitude.  This one came at about 15 km/s and faded low at 23.5 km altitude.  Also, it had an Aten type orbit mostly confined within Earth's orbit, which makes it quite rare.

Asteroids, meteors, and meteorites

Veeery busy day yesterday, complete media storm leaving little time to work out the meteor track. Meteor lights up the night in Norway Powerful air blast.  One fractured window reported, otherwise no serious damage.  I had just fallen asleep and didn't notice a thing, though my geophones in my basem...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

37056 China is one of very few countries that adopted what I would call a true "strike the curve down and keep it down" policy, in the sense that they were not content with having to deal with repeated waves. And they're hosting the Olympics in half a year.  I wonder how that will work ou...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

37041 when children are born do they inherit antibodies/immunity from their parents who had gotten sick from it? I'm not an expert but my understanding is that newborns have some protection due to antibodies shared through the placenta and then the breast milk.  So this protection is quite limited,...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

37031 But to blame a lack of data, the important question then is which data were lacking?  Like, how long various restrictions would be required (i.e. the effect on the spread and how exactly the pandemic would play out unchecked), and how much harm the restrictions would cause, for the economy an...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

37021 A powerful and well-researched piece by Tanner Greer on Palladium: I don't think what delays action is so much fear of panic, but lack of data.  The aid of hindsight makes this kind of criticism somewhat unfair.  And how most governments have dealt with this pandemic doesn't really strike me ...

Qr Bbpost I never get tired of it.

The only thing I might dislike about it, is that in winter if there isn't a lot of snow, such inversion might be bad for the snow conditions. It might be -10C or colder in the valley, but +5C above the clouds.

Qr Bbpost Mother of Pearl clouds!  Those are very rare- how often do you get to see them there?

A few times a year here, usually between December and February.  They typically form over the mountains.

Since I moved a bit uphill with a view many years ago, low clouds have been something which never fails to fascinate.  It can be really nice to look out of the window in the morning to discover that the city is gone and replaced by a white plain or desert changing every minute.  Here's a little coll...
