No but that seems like a fascinating series!  The one I am thinking of was contained in two large (1,000 page!) books and started at the beginning of the universe.  I wish I could remember its name.  It's on wikipedia somewhere (thats where I originally found it.)

I found this interesting bit of astronomy related to the Lensmen series.

Could intuitive AI generate realistic procedural alien life? This certainly seems like the right path:

take a spore like approach to procedural life, with pre-made creatures, and don't show them on the surface only show them in a screen in which people can view what creatures are on the planet.
