beautiful great pc! the next thing you should focus on i think is the gpu. i got the 970 too but soon it wont serve us well  :D
other than that, all of the rig is superb. as a one with 1TB of ssd i can say that switching to ssd from HDD changed my gaming-computering life, so much smoother and faster, you will enjoy it alot!

The price though is ridiculously prohibitive.

Hi guys, my dad and I are thinking about upgrading our PC, but neither of us are experts. Though we have contacted our tech-savvy relative, you guys seem pretty knowledgeable on the subject, so I'd like to get your input as well.

What should we upgrade? I'd love to run modern games like SE on high graphics settings and as close to 60 fps as possible. We don't have a price limit yet, but I'd appreciate not going too crazy.

Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit (6.3, Build 9600)

System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GT 630

Processor: AMD A8-5500 APU with Radeon HD Graphics

Motherboard: MSI 2AE0

RAM: 8.00 GB (7.90 usable)

Display: 1680 x 1050 (59.883Hz)

NathanKerbonaut, your card is very old and weak for today games. it will be best to upgrade it, but remember that its not good to run strong card with weak CPU, so you might need to upgrade them both.
Your Ram seems decent and good for modern games. (most of the games today need minimum of 4-8GB ram)
and your OS seems modern too.
do you know what motherboard do you have? if you buy new card and cpu you must first check if you can connect them to the motherboard. if the motherboard not good, dont worry so much. a new appropriate motherboard price is not high. my brother use 70$ motherboard with gtx 1070 and i5 cpu.

when you know your budget you can tell us here and we can see what is the best thing to do with that budget

NathanKerbonaut, the first thing you and your dad should do is figure out a budget. Once you do that, we can better help you decide what new hardware you should choose. I definitely agree with Spacer's assessment that you need both a new CPU and a new graphics card; your budget will determine which replacements you should get.

Thanks for the responses, guys, this is good info :)

My motherboard is MSI 2AE0. I'll add that to my first post.

We're willing to purchase anything as long as it works, but we'd like to keep it all under $1000. This may change as we continue our research, though.

are you from U.S? or europe?
recently i checked and in the U.S the pc parts are much cheaper than here and parts of europe

We've been saving up for projects like this for a while, so I know my dad will be alright making a few big purchases. And yes, we're in the US.

My motherboard is MSI 2AE0
If you want to stick with that motherboard, the best you're guaranteed to be able to do regarding a CPU is an A10-5800K. IMO it's worth it to get a new mobo altogether and move your whole system to a newer standard and set you up for an easier time in the coming years.

Here's a lower-budget part list you might want to look at, which would utilize your current case and power supply: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Harbinger ... ved/dmPkLk

If you're willing to spend the extra few hundred dollars, this higher-end list (which includes a new case) would rock your world: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Harbinger ... ved/cYcsYJ

Note: your current power supply should be no less than 500W. If it's not, then you'll need a new power supply as well.

HarbingerDawn, i like that build! but instead of that cpu, he can get with the same price i7 6600k or even the i7 6700k with few extra $.
anyway i see his monitor is not full hd. i guess it will be better if he will have one.
maybe we can build something with a new monitor.
maybe -gtx 1060
and -i5 6600k
instead of ddr4 ram. he can buy just -1 extra 8gb ddr3 ram so he will have 16gb total.
with that build i think he will have extra 300-400$ to spend on a monitor.
depends if we put in his build some 250gb ssd or TBHDD

Spacer, the Ryzen 7 1700 is a good CPU, especially for SE, which is able to take full advantage of multiple threads. And having a motherboard with an AM4 socket will make future upgrades easier since AMD rarely changes socket types. Intel changes sockets frequently, meaning that to buy a new CPU in the future you must also buy a new motherboard.

And if he's going to spend money now upgrading his computer/building a new one, it makes sense to upgrade to a modern motherboard with DDR4, SATA III, USB 3.x, etc. It will make life easier in the coming years.

At least, that's my opinion :)

HarbingerDawn, yeah sound good, i am less expert with motherboards and it's true intel need 1151 socket etc...
so your motherboard idea sounds good and he can go with the ryzen 7 1700.
so the question is if he wants full hd monitor but weaker card or stay with his monitor and have gtx 1070 (super strong card)
also if he doesnt want new monitor he can buy 16gb of ddr4 ram like you propused.

I'd love a new monitor, but I'm concerned it may not fit in my desk :P It's got two raised surfaces on the sides, leaving a space in the middle. I bet an HD screen could fit, but it'd be a tight squeeze.
