You wouldn't have thought it... I didn't even realise there were different image modes but those rings are invisible in HDR mode (which is what I seemed to have set as standard). I only saw them when I accidentally pressed V and went to Auto mode.

In 0.990, the black area on planets like this looks like vegetation up close:


I just don't get why vegetation would completely cover one hemisphere of a planet and leave the other side completely barren. There isn't even any correlation with the amount of sunlight received by the surface, because this planet is tidally locked but the black area covers half the side facing the sun and half the side opposite the sun.

A sinkhole in the middle of a river?

RS 8496-507-8-11960985-115 is a temperate marine superterra with organic multicellular life and an ESI 0f 0.855. The strange part? Its a rogue planet without a star. Yes, that's right, its a somewhat Earth-like world, complete with oceans of liquid water, all without the light of a nearby star. It has a greenhouse effect of 400 degrees F, which is whats keeping it from freezing. Oh, and this thing is also 12 billion years old

Green only appears green in the yellow sunlight.
That's why a planemo, of course, can not have any green at all.
And a Planemo can of course also have no chlorophyll, because chlorophyll also requires sunlight. I suspect that planets under a red sun could have chlorophyll plants, but they would not be green. (I think they would be black.)

The ecology of a planemo would be based on chemosynthesis, not photosynthesis. It should be possible for organisms to evolve infrared-sensing vision even if there isn't any sunlight.

Most creatures on Planemos are probably blind and have ultrasound and sonar senses like bats and dolphins.

In latest 0.990 builds its texture still looks warped like a giant squid fossil, but the pit is gone (with some bug fixed, probably).

Also when I went to find the place again yesterday before posting, on the same moon I found a wide area full of broken plates with jagged walls.
I tried to restart SE and disabled texture compression just in case, but nothing changed.

RSC 0-8-11967305-997-86-0-0-15 B6 has hydrocarbon lakes that stretch far and wide while being extremely shallow.

They look bigger from orbit, but when you land on a "shore", you see a rocky desert all around and the lake somewhere far away. It disappears like a mirage as you get closer, until you find a "true shore". And even then depth mostly ranges from 5cm, where detailed rocks are sticking out, to 35cm with occasional "island" chains. There may be places deep enough to dive, but I didn't go that far.


Capturing video in 60 fps is a laggy slideshow on my PC, hence the weird camera handling.

P.S. I stumbled upon a post from 2017 talking about this "mirage" bug, so I guess it's old and known.

Not really strange I guess, but I had to share the massive black hole inside of IC-1101. It takes up the whole cluster and is still outshining anything withing around 1200 lightyears
