Where are the extremely supermassive black holes?

09 Feb 2018 21:30

I know that every galaxy in SE has a supermassive black hole at its center. So far the most massive black holes I've found are about 5*10[sup]8[/sup] solar masses. I know that some central black holes in the real universe can exceed 10[sup]9[/sup] and even 10[sup]10[/sup] solar masses, but I have not found any. Do such massive black holes exist in SE and are just super rare? Or is there a reason they are not included?

Go to IC 1101.  That galaxy has the black hole you are looking for.

As a vague rule of thumb, the size of the core black hole varies with the size of the galaxy, so look for big galaxies in the 50kpc radius range. It shouldn't be hard since they're also the most luminous and can thus be spotted at quite a long distance ;)
