Will the planetarium version be entirely reality based and can be used by amateur astronomers like Starry Night or Stellarium?  Hopefully it will have a plugin to update real exoplanets automatically and assign terrain to them based on what type of planet they are!

Planetarium mode will fundamentally be what it already is - it already allows you to disable rendering of procedural objects. It is already useful for amateur astronomers in some cases, but I highly doubt it will ever be a replacement for a dedicated earthbound planetarium program like Stellarium. It's not really fair to compare the capabilities of SE, which is trying to depict a 3D 1:1 scale representation of the entire universe, which you can fly around in freely and seamlessly, with a program that dedicates its entire existence to depicting the sky as seen from planets in the Solar system.

So  basically, "Flight Simulator" will be the only available Single Player mode for now, and "Game version of SE" with walking, driving, space battles, economics, harvesting of resources, refueling, building will be a completely separate product? 

Or after several years of development Flight Simulator will be renamed back to "Single Player" and improved to have these (or at least some of them) features?

Imho, it would be great if the full game mode will be a part of the program. But if you plan to release it as a separate product, then okay, I can deal with it.

This hasn't been decided yet, it depends on how development goes.

In 0.980, there don't seem to be any nebulae in procedurally generated irregular galaxies, even though you'd expect them to be rich in star-forming regions. Will 0.990 correct that? I also haven't seen any nebulae in elliptical galaxies, but star deaths should still be expected to generate planetary nebulae and supernova remnants.

It's more like Starry Night then, which is the other program I use.  I dont use Stellarium much because for the reason you mentioned- it doesn't show what the sky looks like from another solar system or in the distant past or distant future (stellar proper motion might be a good addition to SE.)  I guess automatically updating known exoplanets would be difficult to do?

Really? I hope they add nebulae to irregular galaxies in 0.9.9.0.
Can I have an order of uhhh randomly generated city lights?

Be as it may, nothing has really changed as far as what is planned for v0990. Everything that is implemented in the up coming version is either written in white or green. Until v0990 is actually released, I see no reason to update the list so rigorously.

Hey, iirc, last year we got a sort of "Christmas present" post describing what was being done for SE. Would such a thing be possible this year, or is it mostly just technical stuff and bugfixes at this point?

Will exporting systems from SE 0.9.8.0 to SE 0.9.9.0 be possible, or has the system generation system changed too much?

Not that I'm arguing against the use of DRM, but it doesn't really do too much to prevent pirates. It stops a few lamers, but pretty much every DRM, even the super advanced ones like Denuvo are cracked at some point, usually within 24 hours of release if its a really popular game.
