A bit of hardware insight I've found using SE that may help in future PC builds.

17 Jan 2018 17:01

I've been using Space Engine for years now starting with a system with just basic integrated graphics to a few high end gaming builds. One thing I discovered is Space Engine loves processing threads. The reason I felt the need to post this is I recently upgraded from 3 different CPU's with very different results. My first high end gaming rig I built since my last one died was a FX 8350 @4.5ghz and a overclocked r9 290 and it ran SE perfectly with virtually no crashes and using a 8.00 magnitude limit on star rendering. Unfortunately that PC died pre maturely and I built a new one featuring an i5 7500 and a GTX 1060 6GB, with this new build I had trouble using SE with a 7.50 magnitude limit and would even crash at the default 7.00 at times. I recently decided to go back to an 8 thread build and bought an i7 7700, now I am back at being stable with a 8.00 magnitude limit on stars. What I learned is SE craves processing threads so IMO if you're building a system for Space Engine, whether it be AMD or Intel go for processing threads. Even though Intel has a strong IPC per core even 4 Intel processing threads couldn't match 8 old and mediocre AMD processing threads. Just food for thought.

That is an interesting thought as I have just finished on a new build for SE.

I have 40 CPU threads on this computer, but SE doesn't seem to use more than 8 threads.

My Desktop VS. My Laptop. The laptop performs much better.

~ Desktop ~
CPU: AMD FX-8350, an 8 Core processor with Cluster-based Multithreading @ 4GHz
(An FX CPU is made up of "modules" that each consist of 2 Integer Processing Units and 1 Floating Point Unit. So an 8 "core" FX does indeed have 8 Processing Cores sharing 4 Floating Point Units. It is both an 8 Thread and 4 Thread processor, every two physical CPUs shares a single Floating Point Unit).
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 w/ 1GB RAM @ 1920x1080, 60Hz
RAM: 4GB 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3
Motherboard: MSI 970 Gaming MS-7693
OS: Windows 8 Home

~ Laptop ~
CPU: Intel i7-6500U, a 4 Core processor with Hyper Threading @ 2.5GHz (can process 8 Threads at once)
GPU: NVIDA GeForce GTX 950M w/ 2GB RAM @ 1920x1080, 60Hz
RAM: 8 GB 1600MHz Dual-Channel DDR3
Motherboard: ASUSTek K501UX (U3E1)
OS: Windows 10 Home
CPU: AMD FX-8350 8 core processor 4GHz / GPU: GeForce GT 730 @ 1920x1080, 60Hz with 1GB adapter RAM / RAM: Patriot Signature 4GB 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3 (only 2GB work, don't buy it) / Motherboard: MSI 970 Gaming MS-7693

@Gnargenox. The GPU in your desktop is terrible and the one in your laptop is much better. The GT 730 was a very low end card meant for mostly video streaming and not 3D applications which is also several years old at this point. The 950m is much newer and much better suited for 3D applications. So it doesn't surprise me SE runs better on your laptop, I'm actually guessing it runs much better.

I didn't think 1GB of video RAM would make such a big difference, and I told myself to get the cheap video card now, because I could always upgrade. LOL like that'll ever happen! My desktop needs more on board memory too. Any recommendations on video cards?

@Gnargenox. Unfortunately there has been quite a GPU shortage right now and the prices are sky high if you can even find one. For example my GPU the GTX 1060 6gb was around $299 last year when I got it, the same GPU now is selling for over $500 second hand online. When everything does go back to normal, hopefully by summer I recommend getting any Nvidia GPU for Space Engine that has at least 3gb of gddr5. At 1080p the resolution I'm on myself you would be very happy with a GTX 1060.

Excellent, that's good to know. I'll be patient and look for a Nvidia with 6GB this summer.

Things will normalise when bitcoins and friends crash. Gfx cards are used for mining. What a waste.

Interesting.
By no means bragging, but i have a GTX1080 Ti, core i7 7700K (mild overclock to 4.8) with 16 gb ram, win 10, and my system is struggling to achieve constant frame rates, I always have stuttering and the loading wheel at the upright position is constantly appearing, im running this at 4K, at least trying to. I dont know if I am missing a windows 10 setting I should be selecting, seems SE is not so focused of video cards I guess.

Try disabling Threaded Optimization in Nvidia 3d Settings -> Program Settings (NOT Global Settings) -> SPACE ENGINE
