Thanks Klud. I see you didn't published L7 surface pak, is there a reason?

Too little improvement, but the file size is quite large, so it makes no sense.
I have one more level (L7) bump, which is more effective, but its size is 5.4 GB, and I do not know where to put it, and whether it is necessary.

If he is still alive he will show up again, he did this on the old site as well.  Safe to assume Klud is a busy guy

When installing the custom surfaces in 0.98, do we still need to delete the cache after doing so?

I don't recall if I did it, but in your case I would do it to be safe.

Where do we need to install the addon above addons/... ? I tried the Grand Canyon without success... Do we need also a kind of map generator to get so much detail (my Earth is desperatly flat) ?

You can place the .pak file as it is under addons/.
It should work, but honestly I don't remember if you need to have also Solar System HD and Ultra addons installed or if doesn't matter.
You will find how to create custom textures ad tons of other things :) in the manual.
Unfortunately objects with texture maps can't have the detail of procedural ones, this will change someday though according to the TODO list.

The surface texture and bump map of the Grand Canyon are about 597 MB for a high resolution patch of 240X277 km (i've measured it on google maps). This means that for the same resolution you could have:
  • The entire land surface of Earth for 1.34 TB
  • All of Europe (up to the Urals) for 91.4 GB
  • All of Russia for 153.3 GB
  • All the United States for 82.1 GB
  • All the surface of the Moon for 340.6 GB (I surelly would download that)
  • A country like Spain for 4.54 GB
It's a lot of memory but it's not impossible with the current storage capabilities of people. I think it's quite fair in exchange of such high detailed maps

I may be wrong but wasn't there higher res. Earth maps available for the last version of SE? I would like to see more mods like this. Also how much time is there involved in creating a mod like the Grand Canyon mod. I would like to have my area in that type of detail and the Earth in higher detail overall if possible?
