COMMUNITY ADDON - Double/Multiple Asteroids fixes for SE

Hi Silicon, welcome back. Permian Therapsid is right, I just checked and the satellite you added is referred to the main belt asteroid 2343 Siding Spring, discovered in 1979, not yet in SE catalog but it will be added now.
Comet Siding Spring you refer to it's a non-periodic comet discovered in 2013, C/2013 A1 Siding Spring. During that passage at perihelion went so close to Mars that several probes at the time in martian orbit could detect its dust.
I will add as soon as I can your contribution.

Hello Mosfet, I did actually add this asteroid in one of my Main belt asteroids update that if do remember correctly, SpaceEngineer did add to the catalog of the Solar System.

The addition however, I did post that in with the downloadable files included only on the 0.981 beta test thread. This is on page 11 of the tread. I did post there because I did change the code names assigned to some comets that had conflicting names with each other or with minor planets.

As you likely know many comets have been discovered by same observer. This is why there are comets with same names, and why comets with same names are usually referred as using names like Shoemaker-Levy 9 for example to distinguish it from other "Shoemaker-Levy" comets when you do not want to use the full designation of the comet. I did use similar naming style in my update.

Minor planets however have unique names among themselves and this is why I did reserve the name "Siding Spring" for the asteroid. And because my file used as a base the comet file from 0.981 I did post it only there. You can check it out if you want on the 0.981 beta test page 11 Mosfet.

COMMUNITY ADDON - Double/Multiple Asteroids fixes for SE

31 Jul 2017 20:25

I am not familiar with the standards on comet designations. Sorry!
I have been encountering two issues when creating asteroids for SE.

The first is on the naming of asteroids that have a proper or temporary designation and have a minor planet designation too. When an object has both of these should the object only be given one name in SE (e.g. (2577) Litva), or should it have two names separated by a forward slash (e.g. Litva/(2577) Litva)?

The second issue I have is that while I was looking at many of the binary asteroids we added in SE I noticed that in game many of the moons do not have inclination relative to the ecliptic. This is because SE does not randomly generate inclinations for catalog objects that have unknown inclinations. Is it fine to leave this as is or should i be setting all moons with unknown inclinations to use the "equator" reference plane (so moons have the same inclination as their primary's obliquity)?

That is not a problem. No one can know everything. And we learn new things all the time.

I have decided to start back from the beginning and sort through any low numbered asteroids that were missed. Here are main belt objects 2535 Hemeenlinna and 2623 Zech.
Also, has SE been given a way to insert forward-slashes as an actual part of an object's name yet?

As Xbrain130 said, a pipe inserted in scripts will be seen as a slash in the program. This starting from SE 0.9.8.1 though.

Silicon, I am sorry but you did have a typo in the name of another of those 2 asteroids. The minor planet (2535) is named after a city in my country named Hämeenlinna, not Hemeenlinna.

No need to apologize. I don't want to get any names wrong (SE is an accurate game after all). I got the names from Johnston's Archive where it is listed as you say. I just misread the first "a" as an "e".

Sorry! Accidentally posted 1453 Fennia's moon a second time instead of 113 Amalthea. Here is the correct script.
How do i edit posts, I didn't want to make a new post just to fix an error.

You will be able to edit your posts after you reach 10 posts. Camilla and Fennia should be in the script in OP, I'll check parameters anyway :), I'll update the others soonTM

Well I will get there soon enough. I also thought that the Camilla in the OP only had one moon, I must have missed it. Also I did miss Fennia, my bad.
If you are checking the parameters then you should know that I only include up to 5 significant digits when I copy parameters. Is this enough or should I include more?

I usually copy full parameters out of laziness, but I think there's no need. 5 digits should be enough.
