There was nothing in the laws of physics that said traveling faster than sound was impossible, it was a true engineering problem. The two cannot be compared
Other thing is, it's not really a problem of time, as if you get close enough to speed of light you won't experience much passage of time no matter how long the journey.
You don't think that solving the quantum gravity problem will help us find a way around the issue though?

But here is the problem (you see this with antibiotics and pesticides and why we're moving away from them towards ways to boost our own immune system to fight illnesses): microbes, weeds and many other creatures evolve far faster than people do. Those creatures will become immune to the very things that we use to kill them much earlier than we ever would (and already are.) So ironically, they become a far bigger threat to people than the creatures they were designed to kill.
