The Future of Humanity & Intelligent life in the universe

remember that overcoming the speed of sound was impossible in the past
There was nothing in the laws of physics that said traveling faster than sound was impossible, it was a true engineering problem.  The two cannot be compared
Other thing is, it's not really a problem of time, as if you get close enough to speed of light you won't experience much passage of time no matter how long the journey.
You don't think that solving the quantum gravity problem will help us find a way around the issue though?

Salvo, I read this excellent link you posted

https://mic.com/articles/88483/somethin ... .oHlXjW518

But here is the problem (you see this with antibiotics and pesticides and why we're moving away from them towards ways to boost our own immune system to fight illnesses): microbes, weeds and many other creatures evolve far faster than people do.  Those creatures will become immune to the very things that we use to kill them much earlier than we ever would (and already are.)  So ironically, they become a far bigger threat to people than the creatures they were designed to kill.

Gnargenox, A-L-E-X, JackDole,  the problem with interstellar travel comes down to some very simple and easy math.

Here is a pretty good site, with a built in calculator that sums it up nicely

http://nathangeffen.webfactional.com/sp ... ulties.php
[hr] As for going more in depth on warp drives and wormholes I will wait for Watsisname

Alternatively you could check this link, its still valid enough

Doc, I think we've discussed this possibility
Another, (perhaps far-fetched?) possibility, is that one day it will be possible to download the human brain, to something as small as a microchip, with durability of hundreds if not thousands of years. Perhaps if this is the future evolution of our species, we will be able to travel in this form to distant stars without being too concerned about the time it takes. (A reader has expressed scepticism of this idea, and so have some philosophers and scientists.)
And how about the possibility of a large generation ship with artificial gravity, atmosphere and sunshine (like a human-made rogue planet really) that journeys through space?  We should be able to get to the nearest stars in 50 years at any rate and over myriads of generations explore the rest of the galaxy.

A-L-E-X, that is much more likely.  Digitized minds would be far more efficient and easier to deal with than fleshy squishy biology.

Problem is required resources to build and power such a ship.  The link above explains this stuff much better than I can.

Yes indeed.  It discusses the two possibilities that we would have in controlled fusion and antimatter powered engines.
I guess we would have to move pretty far up the Kardashev scale, right now we are a measly 0.7  Do you think we can get to level 2 at least Doc, or are we likely to go extinct first?
Sagan seemed to like the scale.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale
The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement, based on the amount of energy a civilization is able to use for communication.[1] The scale has three designated categories:

A Type I civilization — also called a planetary civilization — can use and store all of the energy which reaches its planet from its parent star.
A Type II civilization — also called a stellar civilization — can harness the total energy of its planet's parent star (the most popular hypothetical concept being the Dyson sphere—a device which would encompass the entire star and transfer its energy to the planet(s)).
A Type III civilization — also called a galactic civilization — can control energy on the scale of its entire host galaxy.[2]

A-L-E-X,not a fan of the Kardashev scale.  It seems rather human-centric, especially if you give Isaac Arthur's video a watch.  His black hole farming video kinda puts these notions of ever increasing energy use to shame.

Nice video, Doc!  "Black Hole Farming" is an interesting concept.  I've seen an idea of using mini black holes to power space ships used before in sci fi stories, I wonder if we will do that one day.

apparently there's no sign of intelligent life, so humanity has no future.

There is still the possibility that life is such an unlikely coincidence that it can not be repeated in the lifetime of the universe.
In other words, one of the Great Filters is the improbability for the emergence of life.
Then maybe we have a future. Although this is absolutely unlikely.

Unlikely but definitely possible, and that is an absolutely crazy thing to think about.

I think it's more likely that life doesn't exist anywhere at all, and we are all just part of a collective dream :P

The Future of Humanity & Intelligent life in the universe

To the future of Space Engine, when Earth is going to need a tridimentional texture: The future of humanity's going to be Free, and maybe a new concept to make the tridimentional texture of earth more easily (computationally) is make the world without cities, without details of the actual world, and whith a procedural generation make just communities highly developed, whitout everthing made from humans, because isfor Money, without money, it does not have to exist the plantations of the size that they are today, everything will be done by the own people, or machines that have for that.
Without money everyone will work on what they like, and so they will fulfill their dreams, and that is a "disclosure" (in portuguese that is "divulgação") of the Free World Charter, an iniciative of Colin R. Turner, from United Kingdom. This job is to made everthing free, because the money is just an intermediary of us and us dreams, and cause the failures in the humanity and death for exploration of animals. If we going to favor the free world, we are against misery, hunger, greed, animals exploration and people, against work whitout change, we pass the majory of life working, to realize us dreams in the end, that not have sense, the work is necessary, to survive, not to make money, we lost 90% of the life to work, working, working, and never will the world's hunger and misery be over, than the iniciative to instal the Free Sistem in the world, maybe do more people think, how like the future, why the future is very different of what is today, and what's that, I go to Search. But this idea is to the future, when space engine need a tridimentional texture... This idea is not for try to make na utopic sistem, is to crash us paradimgs of what is possible and impossible, our imagination is the limit, not Money. But us forced that...
Pluto taught us at least how creative the universe could be (DOCUMENTARY)
