So, since its the Sputnik aniversary (aswell as the 100th aniversary of the Russian revolution) I wanted to share some space images with you. In this case we have images from the Indian Mars Orbiter Mission that celebrates also it's third year in space. I've downloadedsome raw images and made some panorama stiching and color corrections with photoshop so they could look nicer (and have lest atmospheric dust).
This is the result:

From here, thanks to the soviet people that took mankind into space and inspired many of us. They showed the world that also the underdeveloped nations can and will write the history of our species. Also congratulations to the Indian space program for reaching and exploring the red planet.

Bonus image (from the European Space Agency Mars Express Mission):

Last hike of the season, I suppose.  A very popular 14 km hike (Besseggen), but the view from the most spectacular part was obscured by snow (also making the 15 m/s wind a bit stingy).  These photos were taken with my mobile phone, and they're actually much better than what my 10 year old DLSR could do, which isn't as good at capturing the high dynamic range of these scenes.

Somewhat mixed weather wise. but it's October.  Which is not a bad time still.  It's winter, but not winter.  Meaning that it's mostly below freezing, yet hiking is still possible, if not easier than in summer since there is little snow and the ground is mostly dry and frozen.  This hike is a bit up and down between 983 and 1743 masl, partly on top of a ridge.  The typical walking time is 6 hours, but with three kids aged 6, 9 and 11 we needed a couple more.  The record is said to be 1 hour 15 minutes (for the 14 km), which is crazy.  To be that fit is one thing, but to run across all that rubble without breaking a leg is another.

beautiful place, but it seems dangerous to climb with such a strong winds+snow and with kids, but i guess it is very fun adventure for them  :)

A mix of joy and misery.  But that's part of learning to manage outdoors.  It wasn't a very perilous climb.  There are vertical drops of several hundred meters, but the ridge is always several meters wide, and people can pass each other safely everywhere.  People with fear of heights may have issues, though.

Today was the last hike of the season.  There was time for another peak.

Great details, what are the coordinates for that planet? I'm gonna assume the atmosphere is mostly breathable.

I think it's the third planet of a star called "Sol", it should have life in it if I'm not wrong.

Great photos, midtskogen.  Getting close to end of the alpine hiking season here as well, though I look forward to winter. :)

We had a small quake here overnight, M2.5, just a few km from my geophones.  The P and S waves are 4.4 seconds apart.

I've had a pretty busy weekend trying to squeeze in as much as possible privately before my actual purpose here I am in Singapore. Travelling this far and only giving a short talk on a conference would be a pity.  So in just over two days I added three new entries to my list of visited countries: Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.  Quite a lot can fit in a couple of days since the time that would normally be used for sleep can be utilised, and the jetlag makes me not able to sleep anyway.  I'm travelling light, no checked-in luggage, only a small backpack, much of which used for Norway clothing which would kill me in Singapore (28C & 90% in Singapore vs snow in Oslo). So I only had my phone for pictures.

Our meteor camera recorded some aurora last night.  The video is quite close to what it looks like in reality, not bad for an IP camera.  Merry Christmas to you all!
