I'm pretty sure we'll soon loose the habit of "manually-driving" cars. As soon as we'll improve our roads to be easily interpreted by a software, we will loose the necessity of controlling our cars since... they can easily do that by themself! So you don't need to worry about car accidents and such, or about finding a parking lot. You can even get drunk since the only thing you need to worry about is setting the destination (I guess, if you're very drunk, pronouncing the sentence "take me home" would be enough).

Also, if every car will communicate with each other, maybe even traffic lights will be useless since you already know what every other car is going to do. So yeah, Tesla are an interesting experiment, also Google Car, but in future a car like that will be considered "ancient"  8-)

Whilst there is currently much progress in AI and sensor technology, I think it's going to be very difficult to eliminate manual driving completely (unless we indeed get flying cars).  Many roads are narrow and I wouldn't trust AI any time soon to be able to agree where to pass oncoming traffic (which may be manually or AI driven), how far off the road's shoulder to go, and so on.  Not to mention trust the AI in difficult weather conditions (like blizzards or heavy rain).

How would society change if jobs were automated? It probably wouldn't be disastrous, but we would have to change things quite a bit.

Assuming society has to change, why not just let people starve to death?

History teaches us that it will probably be catastrophic.

Considering the course of human history, this is probably going to happen.
