I opened the lid on my compost bin today and found this frosty pattern on the underside:

I've no idea really how nature has managed to paint this.  It reminds me of a kind of folk art typical of Norway.

midtskogen, That's a nice sighting! Check some other time to see if you can find other stuff too! It's nice what nature can create. :)

Nature is full of fractals, and perhaps this is an example.  Another possibility is that it's an artefact of the production of the bin, a pattern otherwise invisible but affecting how well frost sits on the surface.

As a kid, on cold winter days I would sometimes take a wet paper towel and wipe it on a glass pane door to make a thin film of water. If the temperature was too cold it would quickly freeze up in an uninteresting glaze. But if it was just right it would freeze slowly and form beatiful intricate designs quite like what you got on your bin there. It was very neat to watch in real time -- the leading points of frost branching out and also curling like ferns.

I imagine it has something to do with the crystal structure when confined to a surface, and given time to grow. It is very interesting. :)

I've been able to keep the compost alive this winter until a few days ago.  Now it's frozen.  We haven't had a single blip above freezing since January, and yesterday had -17C (and a stiff breeze, overcast and light snow), which is highly unusual for March in steep terrain like here, and there's nothing above freezing in the 10 day forecast.  I used the opportunity to demonstrate the boiling water in a cup trick to my kids.  If the contents of a cup is tossed in the air it immediately turns into a cloud of ice and mist if it's hot water and nothing will fall to the ground.  However, if it's cold water, the same trick is quite unspectacular and it only turns into a spray of water and drops will fall to the ground.  It worked as advertised.  It may seem counter-intuitive that boiling water will freeze faster.

I've been gone awhile, however for the various planets and worlds I have created I have come up with lore for them.

Would anyone like to see said lore?

Sure, why not? You have your addons thread, why don't you write about said lore as a "bonus" content for your mods?

If it's related to your worlds, I don't think there's a better place for everyone to read it than your own thread :)

The icicles here have been steadily becoming larger every time we pass this building this winter.  The large one probably is a few 100 kg now.  Better stay a bit clear.

dang! We never see anything like that here. I suppose that Oslo has worse winters than new york, then?
