the worst thing that has ever happened to you

Spent 10 years in a very nasty, abusive group home. That's been the vast majority of my adult life, after getting kicked out of my parent's place. The staff were narcissistic and emotionally and psychologically abusive. I only finally got out last year.

Sadly, this ties with another equally bad event. Being forced to move from the big city/suburb to some hick rural town in 8th grade. As someone who was already well aware of cultural differences by then, it sucked. Plus there's never any single women out in the boonies.

I passed a kidney stone over the past week. What was cool was the emergency room I went to at 4am was staffed by a doctor that I knew from college, 30 years ago. Small world.

PS kidney stones feel like a sword in your side. Not fun at all.

the worst thing that has ever happened to you

Well, got hit by a car when aged 8 at the end of my first grade in elementary school. Two broken vertebrae accompanied by a much less serious pelvis fracture. It took me three weeks in hospital (where I observed my first and only Venus transit, 2004, so there is at least some light in it) and the rest of the summer in corset lying at home to fully recover.

Last year I got dropped from an uni where I aspired to study astronomy/astrophysics later. Now I study another uni with the intention to get to nuclear physics, not exactly my branch but I think I'll adjust.

Realizing when I was little that I will never be a dinosaur.

Lots of interesting stories on this topic though!

I've been around for quite some time. Honestly, I do not know where to start. In my opinion, it's best not to discuss such things online.

Exactly. Same here. I've had a few hairy moments in my life too, but they tend to dilute the impact of them when you bandy them about, especially in impartial settings like online forums (at least that's what I think). It is still interesting to read the experiences of others, but for me this forum is for relaxing and sharing scientific and gaming opinions and ideas. After a rough day, its great to unwind, and just talk by proxy with somebody you don't even know, nor will ever. Reminding yourself of your past hardships delineates from this (no disrespect intended).

But that is what the Off Topic forum is for...

I just ended a 12 relationship with a woman I had planned on spending the rest of time on this planet with. You can imagine the investment of the best years of my life being tossed into the void. She was the only person who knew who I was. For the first time ever I'm glad we didn't have any children, even though I never cared if we didn't. I'm only upset that I continously ignored the obvious, that I lied to myself so long, hoping, trying. I don't even want to remember the good times. I just want to forget and not feel any pain.
