So its looking like this Christmas will be in the top 10 for coldest holidays for the Minneapolis area, with highs in the -10° F realms. Looking forward to it!

Reminds me of when I would sometimes encounter lifeterras in SE with an average air temperature of -10° F... :D

Unusual weather

19 Dec 2017 15:30

This morning in Norway, at 1894 meters elevation, a temperature of +3.3C was recorded.  At lower elevations temperatures stayed around -10C many places, and it was raining, but some coastal areas were fully exposed to the warm air, one place reaching +16.1C today.  Not bad for December at 63N.

It sure is (not just you), and it's about to get even more pronounced:

Another way to see it is with the 500mb geopotential height anomaly, since cold airmasses are denser and decrease the geopotential height:

This is a strong example of waves in the jet stream letting warm air northward and cold air southward.  Notice the warmth in the Arctic coincident with it.  Basically what's happening is warm air is pushing northward from the Pacific, and cold air is spilling southward over North America:

Individual model forecasts that far (8+ days) out are fairly unreliable though, so take the anomaly values themselves with a grain of salt.  It's a bit better to use ensemble forecasts, like the above images (except the wind map).  I know what you mean though. :)  It's fun to follow what's going on.
