Unusual weather

08 Jan 2018 22:21

I don't know if it's ever been documented, but I think it's possible also to have rain at the North Pole even in December or January.

EDIT: I found some weather data from last winter collected quite near 90N from November to February, and three times in that period the temperature reached about 0C.  It may not have rained, but it shows it's feasible that it could happen from time to time even in mid-winter.

Interesting situation on Sunday.  A low of ~940 hPa near Iceland and highs of ~1045 hPa to the east and south, > 100 hPa difference.  This will dump a huge amount of rain over Svalbard, even beyond 80N, and possibly large amount of snow in SE Norway, and perhaps give hurricane winds for western Norway.

The most snow in February in many parts of Oslo for decades.  My ultrasound sensor 15 meters behind my house reads 132 cm today.  More snow expected in a couple of days.  I've been shovelling a lot lately.

An interesting rescue story in really extreme weather and pretty incredible footage.  In Norwegian, so here's a summary: One guy and two dogs are surprised by hurricane winds (mid January, at 70N), but the ground is rocky and digging a snow cave for shelter proves difficult. Where he finds sufficient snow, the wind rips the cave apart and he basically has no shelter.  The hurricane persists and the next day he's becoming weak and he triggers his emergency beacon.  Rescuers are unable to reach him because snowmobiles are simply blown away or engines stop because the snow penetrates everything.  They eventually reach his position the day after, but even though they're only a few meters away, it takes another hour for them to find him because there is zero visibility.  He only suffers a frostbitten hand and a scar in his face that he got when the rescuers removed the huge ice block(!) that had formed in his beard.

Unusual weather

25 Feb 2018 00:42

Sudden stratospheric warming and the polar vortex has split. It was reported a week ago that the stratosphere above the north pole had suddenly warmed from -80C to -30C, disturbing the polar vortex.  This is a pretty rare event, several years between each incident, and it may affect the weather many places in the NH for weeks.  For much Europe it means cold weather.  I'm a bit sceptical of forecasts several weeks ahead, but it seems real for this event.  Southern Norway has already got stuck into a dry and cold spell with no end in sight.  Here in Oslo we usually gets inundated with warm and wet Atlantic lows during winter, dumping a mix of snow and occasional rain.  This winter has had a lot of snow, around 150 cm on the ground now in the forests near Oslo, and I think the snow is secured till early May this year.  February will be the first month I've ever recorded without a single reading above 0C, and the cold seems to last at least until the middle of March.

In the high Arctic, however, it's very warm, with temperatures above freezing at the North pole where temperatures usually stay in the 30's below at this time of the year.

The snow is going to pause for a while, and the 10 day forecast has only fair, cold weather, so I grabbed my camera and walked around in my neighbourhood in Oslo to document the snow in case we've reached the peak (but who knows what April will bring).

Fascinating picture.  That doesn't look safe... Much bad weather at the northern coast of Norway recently.

Went to the beach the other day to see the effects of a big storm spinning off the coast.  In 30+ m/s winds it gets hard to stand straight, and the sand flows along the ground like a river.  Very neat experience.  Also apologies for the lousy sound -- might want to turn volume down.

Looks like a nice beach, when the weather is more fair.

We've finally got normal spring weather here. Only 89 cm of snow to go, which should take another 2 to 4 weeks depending on the weather.

And I'm off to Calgary this weekend. When I checked the weather there a few days ago, it said -15C which seems pretty unusual for April. But I guess things are thawing rapidly now.

It was snowing in Oslo today.  Snow in May is moderately unusual here.  It's still good skiing conditions many places in the woods north of the city, but I think today's skiing will be the last of the season.

How much snow is left now on 1st May?  Well, the pole is 155 cm long and nearly vanished.

midtskogen, you are the coolest non-fictional person I know of. Your whole setup, your command of the sciences of weather and astrometry, and your approach to gathering and interpreting data... it's just hugely impressive, dude, all of it.

Hats off to you, sir.
