Remain super skeptical to this but if true this is pretty big stuff
The paper looks legit.  Not really my area and not sure if the implications are being overblown, but it does sound promising!

Bit of the same for me, but from what i can understand from it if it can be scaled and if it does work then this means controlling the levels of Co2 or other greenhouse gases may be possible.
If it is cheap enough and can scaled to a large enough area then the requirement for oxygen production from nature may be side stepped.

Will it also control methane leaks which are a problem with natural gas?

And this article, especially for us tech-nerds ;-)

The Robot Economy: Ready or Not, Here It Comes
JP Sottile, Truthout: As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in which automation and artificial intelligence replace human workers, the true test will be how we as a society choose to manage the widening pain of displacement as we move from this economy to the next one. Either way, it's not only coming … it's already here

No, what they found is specifically a means of capturing CO2 by a synthetic analogue of photosynthesis, so it won't work with methane.

I think it's a pretty neat finding because it involves using principles of quantum mechanics to our advantage, by specially tailoring the behavior of electron transitions in a material so that blue light will trigger this reaction.  It also raises the question as to what else we can achieve with these methods -- we may be able to fundamentally alter chemical reactions at a quantum mechanical level to do all sorts of useful things. :)

While true, this is still a pretty major thing to be able to do.  If it could be scaled it could drastically slow down climate change and even help alleviate some of the problems from deforestation and ocean acidification.
Big if though.

Tabby's Star is undergoing a dimming event. Automated Planet Finder, Hobby-Eberly Telescope, Large Binocular Telescope, SWIFT, and numerous other telescopes are currently observing or about to observe the star.
This is the first dimming of the star that has been observed since Kepler's prime mission ended.

Observations are being carried out by:
Large Binocular Telescope
Keck I and II
Minerva Telescope Array
MMT
Hobby-Eberly Telescope
Palomar
SWIFT
Green Bank Telescope
Automated Planet Finder
KELT
HARPS-N
TRAPPIST
Possibly SOFIA on May 24th.

Dimming in I,R,V,B bands between JD 2457890.7 and JD 2457892.8:
I: 0.09%
R: 0.73%
V: 0.82%
B: 1.82%
If confirmed, increased dimming in shorter wavelengths would suggest dust / ice.

Yes, I'm hopeful that we'll be able to use quantum mechanics to do all sorts of things at the biochemical level.  Photosynthesis itself depends on QM (as do some of our senses and even DNA.)

Third* (probably only the Second Revealed to be an Artifact) Black Hole merger event detected by LIGO. Their data also suggests that one of the black holes had a spin vector misaligned with its orbit, which is consistent with black hole mergers being caused by individual objects that sink to the cores of clusters, rather than a binary star having both components become black holes before merging.

This merger is really interesting!  You would think that as black holes (or any two objects) spiral together, they would always stay in the same orbital plane -- the orbits would simply shrink.  This is no longer true when you allow the black holes to spin, and have spins in different directions.

In this case, the black hole spins were in very different directions from the orbital plane, and as they got closer together this spin-orbit interaction caused the orbital plane to change quite dramatically:

So this merger is a very nice demonstration of black hole spin and its effects!  Nature just provided us with the equivalent of dropping a stone into a spinning black hole, and watching how the stone gets caught and dragged around by the whirlpool of space.

I love how the smaller BH is smeared across the larger one!
Speaking of misaligned orbits, why are so many Hot Jupiters in polar orbits around their host star?
Are there any in SE I could take a peek at with such crazy orbital planes?

Here is one, in such an orbit, Kelt-9b. Planets surface temp... wait for it....4600K
WHOA! That's as hot as many K-type stars! Over the life of the star the Hot Jupiter will be slowly stripped of all of its atmosphere, down to the core from Ultraviolet light.

This exoplanet is hotter than most stars
