A pretty good video by Isaac as usual.  I tend to agree on the more pessimistic side of things when it comes to technological civilizations in our galaxy.  Every time I have ever done those sorts of calculations I always come back with <1.  There isn't enough data but I personally think it is safe to assume, at least within our galaxy, we are probably the only advanced species.

yeah i am with you. for me there is 3 options:
1) what you said
2) earth is like a protected national park or zoo and aliens can't visit (thier rules, like in star trek) and that is why we don't find them or hear from them
3) we allready found them but it covered up

Isaac seems somewhat Earth centric assuming that intelligent life must be like on Earth.  Life on Earth is a product of the conditions on Earth and our solar system.  Life elsewhere might not require the same and be different instead.  But I think he's right that there is a huge distance between life and space technology enabled life.  It's not hard to find plausible solutions to the Fermi paradox.

I agree with this.
I think that only races that have overcome their primitive instincts have entered interstellar space.
So primitive races such as the mankind will be isolated.
Until they have destroyed themselves, or are grown up. :|

I remember a litle ago I once tried to calculate a "population density" for the Milky Way, so to speak.

I don't somehow remember anymore how I got to this result, but I think it was 1 planet per some hundred of square light-years (a scale that kind of defeats the use of cubic light-years imo), even when accounting for the often-forgotten Galactic Habitable Zone.

I quite a far distance between two.

The Starmus 2017 talks are streamed live here.  Many well known speakers.  Right not the topic is exoplanets.  I don't know if it's available outside Norway, though.  It might be necessary to find a Norwegian proxy.
very interesting..

Isn't it possible that dark flow is just an illusion caused by the great attractor itself? It could be that photons from the CMB are slightly pulled toward the great attractor as they approach our telescopes. That would also cause the effect to appear in the same direction. It could be that the Planck team factored that out and the WMAP team didn't.
I'm sure they've considered the most direct effects of the great attractor.  My concern here is that the effects are so tiny, so confirmation bias becomes a big factor.

Spacer, I think Isaac Arthur's videos, given the speculative nature, should be in the off topic thread about intelligent life.  Good video though
