Well, sorry for picking on dark matter so much.  Maybe I just don't like the name.  A better name could be "dark gravity", since gravity is what's being observed, not matter, which is only one cause of gravity but not necessarily the only one.

Ooh, I searched for "dark gravity" and found that deGrasse Tyson makes my point precisely in a fine way.

Pretty cool, though the invention of the first maser should really be credited to the universe. :P

TESS: the space telescope that will find nearby Earth-like planets

13 Apr 2018 20:55

------------------------------------------------------
Merged from the "TESS: the space telescope that will find nearby Earth-like planets" topic
------------------------------------------------------

As I did not see any post on TESS in the whole forum, I created this one to talk about it.

The launch will be on Monday at 6:32 PM EST time.

I read in the website that 'science operation will begin at the start of June, with the first data reaching the archive at the beginning of December'.

Due to the delay with the launch, I guess that the first data won't be available until January 2019 Image

Anyway I just made a video on TESS, if you guys wanna check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bsxl...ZinoGtUGEOankw

Neat.  Especially the effect of pressure on a spark.

Great video as always by PBS Space-Time.  Big takeaway message is how much gravitational wave astronomy has developed in the last 2 years, and where it is headed!

I know my first post here is going to be a ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎ post and I'm really off to a wrong start here by doing so, but I think people should be naturally curious about phenomenon in the universe and not Neil deGrasse Tyson. He should have avoided twitter
1. UFOs are probably real, and they are probably communists.
2. Space is a worthwhile endeavor
3. Beneficial invasion is inevitable.

Abstract:
After more than 12 years the Rosetta spacecraft crash-landed on comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko on September 30, 2016. It has traveled billions of kilometers, just to study a small (4 km diameter), black boulder named 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The results of this mission now seem to fully justify the time and money spent in the last decades on this endeavor. In the talk I will look back on the craziest mission ever flown by the European Space Agency and point out its technical challenges and scientific highlights. I will show how the results of this mission change our understanding about the formation of the solar system, the Earth and finally life itself.
