Astrophotography

Fighting clouds, I just managed to catch Venus passing through the Pleiades. I'm sure there will be much better images than this, but I was glad to catch it. :)

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

33276 Just a personal thing, I find that very hard to believe. Everything about this and the situation is very suspicious.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯   It's perhaps a natural thing to be suspicious of, and I will always encourage to keep an open mind, though not so open that your brains fall out. And a s long as y...

Presentations by Dr. Birx and Dr. Fauci were excellent today (skip to 14:40 for them).

I don't think it is useless. These are different ways of visualizing the same data, and both are valid. You can color by clade, and then see the variations over time and where they occur on the map.  Or you can color by region on the map, and then see in the phylogenetic tree how it has diverged as...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

From a doctor in New York. This was a very nice video explaining, in clear terms, what we understand about how this virus is transmitted, and how people can protect themselves and their families. Much is what we've already heard, but some is also perhaps not so obvious, and what I especially like is...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

33242 I personally feel this virus was created on purpose to disrupt the world economy. Its just too suspicious to me. The question of whether the virus could have been created and released by humans (intentionally or otherwise) was asked, a lot, on the SE Discord server.  Answer (again with thanks...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

33212 Pretty interesting.  Testing in Iceland, however, indicates that as many as 50% of those infected have no or hardly any symptoms.  If the models had been run in such a configuration, I wonder how the results would change. I think we can gain some intuition by looking at the models he runs sta...

I am so happy with Washington State's response. To the rest of the US, you can do this!

That's absolutely beautiful, Phunnie. I love the colors, and that blue-green center makes me think of tropical waters, or of Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

Alarming (but not yet robustly verified) news. It appears that the strain of the virus spreading through the US  might be more dangerous in younger age groups: https://i.imgur.com/PqOFXJX.png I'm hoping that this could be due to biases in terms of people who have the most travel and contact with ot...

A good interactive map with models for each state in the US, showing the cases over time and expected number of deaths based on current trajectory and under adapting different levels of social distancing or lockdowns. https://covidactnow.org/ We're already seeing in the data that the social distanci...

33136 "Can" is also an important word. If treated, mortality does seem fairly low, and I wouldn't be surprised if it approaches that of flu when all the numbers are in.  If the healthcare system is overwhelmed, however, there can be little doubt now that it becomes a very dangerous virus ...

It also has a tendency to directly go for the lungs and result in pneumonia, fibrosis (scarring), and permanently reduced lung capacity. For some, recovery does not necessarily mean back to 100%, and that is also not always limited to the elderly or cases with the most severe symptoms. I've seen som...
