Science and Astronomy Videos

To doomsday scenarios like the False Vacuum Decay or that the LHC might create a black hole that destroys the world, I always have the same reaction: My life experiences so far have shown me that the laws of physics are exceptionally stable. In other words, if the universe is viewed like a video gam...

The Future of Humanity & Intelligent life in the universe

Also that population boom was addressed in the video, fairly early on as I recall. Currently the global human population is growing at a steady rate of one billion people every so many years. Many people are born, and many other people die, but the death rate is much smaller than the birth rate. If ...

Spellckeck of the SE website

^ I was going to point that out myself but I was afraid it was a practical joke and I didn't want to be the first one to fall for it xD

We need to make sure to include a few blurbs from that famous Pale Blue Dot speech, if nobody's mentioned that already.

Has anyone found a white dwarf rotating faster than this? I found it by chance and was impressed when I could clearly see it rotating in real time (at low exposure of course): http://i.imgur.com/77Ucqwyl.jpg It does make sense for it to be spinning this fast, particularly given the presence of the a...

Online spacecraft editor

YAY new spacecraft editor / update! Wait - this isn't new at all! In fact it's old. Why has this one been linked instead of the more recent one from last November? BTW, where would one such as I go to make feature requests for this? Also, whenever I try to go to any thread in the Russian forum I re...

The doppler shift of the accretion disk is absent. Not to sound argumentative but no it isn't. It is, however, much more subtle than you might have expected going in. Keep in mind that Doppler shift isn't going to be obvious until the disk contents are moving close to the speed of light, which is o...

Let it be known for posterity that I've been running SE fine for years on an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 chip. ;)

Planets with potentially breathable atmospheres

Yeah I've had a lot of trouble finding breathable atmospheres in SE thanks to seemingly every danged planet having tons of SO 2 in the air. There's worlds here and there that have enough oxygen, the right pressure, etc. but almost every time that SO 2 has to show up and ruin it >.< Am I the only one...

Last I checked they do in fact feature Doppler shifts, unless you mean something in addition to blueshifting and redshifting on different sides o_O

Last I heard those had been temporarily removed due to some bug they were causing for SpaceEngineer. Here's hoping in the next edition they come back :\

So where there are mountains, the crust goes lower than flat areas? Indeed it does. The land is heavier, after all, and while the continents assuredly do not float in the ocean, they do in fact float on the asthenosphere (liquid part of the upper mantle), so if it get thicker, it sinks in further t...

I feel you regarding the procedural galaxies' size cap, but I have a hunch that it's in there for a reason - like perhaps without it we'd have the odd galaxy 50 Mpc across outshining the Moon from the edge of the visible universe xD Here's hoping sooner or later SpaceEngineer does another deep-space...
