General global warming / climate change discussion

Continued from the old forum ... The news of a whistleblower in NOAA is all over  sceptical blogs this weekend.  It's already been compared to the ClimateGate scandal, but doesn't really add so much new insight to the state of climate science in my opinion.  So, a pause buster paper was rushed to pu...

Unusual weather

The fog finally lifted somewhat today, and had left a thick layer of icing (literally) on the forest.  It may look like snow heaven, but it's mostly almost pure ice weighing down the trees, not so much snow, and truth is that we're having the least snowy winter in almost 30 years in Oslo.  It's Febr...

2666 I would, thats an experience to take with you for the rest of your life. But not really worth the cost of a new car or a small home. I have experienced weightlessness.  Sort of.  While I was in the air force, a fellow soldier had a license to fly small planes, so off duty we occasionally rente...

Realistically, the space tourism that we can hope for within the few next decades, will only be suborbital flight.  Frankly, a nice view and 10 minutes of weightlessness isn't something I would pay a lot for.  However, if suborbital flight can replace today's 10-14 hour intercontinental flights, red...

What's the essential experience of space travel?  The view?  The weightlessness?  Both?

2627 why the middle east or countries near the mediterranean sea gets lot amount of snow when its cold enough My guess is that you can have cold, polar air meeting a front with moist air, which can dump a lot of snow.  That can happen in Denmark as well. Latitude isn't everything.  It can be snowin...

Actually, i have an idea that explains why there is not very much snow here in Denmark. When cold weather goes from the Arctic to Denmark, it probably passes through the North Sea, where most of the snowy weather probably goes to the British islands or Norway. Denmark rarely gets large amount of sn...

2592  Any such measurement must be reviewed and demonstrate good methodology before being accepted as an official world record. Besides good methodology, you must have the same methodology to be able to to comparisons.  Since snow compacts quickly, it matters whether the measurement and cleaning is...

As it so happens, the world record for most snowfall recorded in a year was placed there: 29 meters in the 1998/1999 season. How is that measured?  At a level place which is measured and swept clean once a day? The wettest place in Norway is on a glacier with an estimated annual precipitation of 56...

Ouch.  I hope you keep the originals.  If you add slight, random noise to your videos before uploading, perhaps the problem largely disappear.

Truly wonderful, LL42.  I wonder, are there any postprocessing tools which could eliminate the banding effects?  HDR and 10/12 bit video gaining momentum, these banding artefacts become somewhat distracting.

Here are a couple of videos showing the effect of the 2011 Japan earthquake in Norway's Sognefjord which goes 200 km into the country.  Not very impressive waves, but we must recall that the source of these waves was over 8000 km away, causing slow ground movement of less than 1 cm in Norway.  The e...

We've had a few days of fog and freezing drizzle here in Oslo.  When moist air from the ocean cools to below freezing above the cooler land, droplets of water don't immediately freeze.  That happens only when they hit particles in the air, or hit the ground.  This is somewhat different from freezing...

I'm going through my old computer stuff trying to salvage some disks (not sure what to do with the cassettes yet), and I find some interesting games.  Those were the days when games were written by a single person, and he could get away with really silly names for the games.  This particular game I ...
