Unusual weather

3512 there is something I find strangely fascinating about the pure elemental fury of winter Yes, it has its own beauty and force.  Many people are attracted to it. Also fascinating over here to hear how such weather closes down schools, etc.  In this particular storm the school was open of course ...

Unusual weather

3434 I'm glad you and your kids were in an unaffected area. Thanks, and we consciously avoided any risky areas including the affected street, but I was still as chocked as anybody else. After a deadly avalanche 14 months ago, which destroyed 11 houses (including the one I stayed in for the solar ec...

Qr Bbpost All of that snow will be swept off the mountain plateaus by the wind tomorrow and it's too risky to be near steep slopes due to the avalanche risk.  So new plans.  Blizzard hike in the wide valley instead.

And what happened next: the unusual weather thread

Unusual weather

In the totally off-topic thread I mentioned the avalanche risk over here today and my decision to stay away from all slopes.  Hours later another avalance hit the town .  Luckily, no-one was killed or injured, but this is very sad for this community. Parts of the town have now been evacuated (the ev...

Fortunately, the right weather isn't such a binary thing this time for success, more a gradually limiting thing on what can be done.  I was hoping to get all through a melt tunnel through the glacier, usually a 1.5 hour hike from town each way, but we'll have to see what's possible.  It's certainly ...

Bringing the kids (5, 9 & 10 yrs) to Svalbard tomorrow Monday.  We only get one full day before leaving on Wednesday.  Looks like we're not getting the perfect weather for a hike out of town.  It's going to be tough.  One full line on the wind arrows is 5 m/s.

midtskogen, that is beautiful! Why are you going to California?

Meeting at Google.  Third time in a year and a little.  The irony: I'm working with videoconferencing. (And in the same period that work has also taken me to meetings in Japan, Argentina, Europe, Korea and the US again next month).

Unusual weather

3064 too many people don't know how to drive in it Yet, it's so simple: don't. If snow is rare, then people wont have snow tyres, so this simple rule is all it takes. The challenge here is that the only (practical) routes between the country's two largest cities (and between other regions) are over...

The main problem with snow here is to keep the mountain roads open during the winter.

Unusual weather

3030 The schools and university have been closed for several days this last week because of it. That sounds so funny.  I can't recall ever hearing about a school over here closing because of snow.  Sure, if an avalanche cut off the road, the roof collapsed, the heating broke down, or something, but...

General global warming / climate chage discussion

2914 I don't spend much time reading IPCC reports, as I've noticed many times their results seem implausible and are sometimes completely disingenuous, remaining unchecked for many years before they are corrected. For example, the Himalayan glaciers are supposed to completely disappear by the year ...

General global warming / climate chage discussion

2880 More than all of the warming is due to anthropogenic causes.  This is because without the anthropogenic greenhouse forcing, Earth would have cooled, not warmed. This is extremely difficult to verify. This more than 100% of the observed warming due to humans causes some confusion.  That is, &qu...
